My question/problem with Gate is:
Why should it summon any creature? You've got Summon Monster IX and Greater Planar Ally for that sort of monkey-business. Gate should be just that: a two-way inter-planar opening. End of problem spell.

I could agree with that. I removed it from the game until someone got off there butt and did a rwrite that I would accept. It was as gate basicaly but could summon any 1 creature off the SM8 list or 2 creatures off the SM7or lower lists.

To use gate as a summon monster spell IMC I would probably only allow it to work if the caster had the true name of an outsider to be summoned or the caster says I want to gate in a Solar etc in which case it would be up to the Solar to come through the gate.

Either that or I would make Gate resemble a Greater Planar Binding without any limits, you would still need to bargain with the thing coming through.
