I just want to say that this character concept is not only better than a katana+trenchcoat guy, it's ironically far less conformist.

I agree. I think probably by virtue of the maturity in thinking about such a concept it is thereby, also 'darker', 'grittier', 'edgier' and all the other things people would seem to be going for with 'katana+trenchcoat'. I mean really, the 16th century is far darker, grittier, edgier, and bloodier than anything else you are likely to read about. Likewise, I should think that real world 'gentlemen with halbred' kicks real world katana wielder in martial art systems of both East and West.
