OSR OSR Layout and Design Thread

I used Affinity Publisher...

....for about a month. Went back to InDesign. The lack of text to table is a HUGE function for RPG books.

Since this is an OSR design thread, I shall provide some OSR examples!

Current project (Shadow Fables, meant for Shadowdark, so the aesthetic is meant to be similar with white space and big black titles)

A spread from how I'm doing OSR style adventure modules.

And another current project, taking 1e/2e hybrid and (hopefully) making it much easier to read and reference, like putting all info the same place.

That's very interesting. I have no idea what text to table is, so perhaps you can expand for the thread. My layout approach is pretty organic and I write directly into layout more often than not, which might explain why I've never encountered that feature. I'm guessing you aren't looking for layout critique though.

So let me be clear. I don't care what program anyone uses. If you want argue about apps this ain't the place. In context, about specific elements, sure, but let's not play roshambo about apps.

I tend to write in Word. It's just easier when writing a book than typing directly into InDesign. so tables are written quickly by using tabs between columns. When in InDesign, you just select the text and go to "convert text to table". Super easy peasy. Affinity doesn't have that option. You have to create the tables manually. And formatting them is not nearly as easy as InDesign either. For a book with lots of tables, InDesign is the way to go. Saves so much time.

With Indesign, it's one click (well, two I think) to go from this:

That does sound like a pain. It also sounds like a problem generated by your workflow. I loathe working in word other than to generate plain text, so I haven't had this problem. I'm glad you brought it up though, workflow integration is important.

Oh, I missed this. I'm always open to feedback. I always keep learning, so I appreciate layout feedback.
I'm always happy to weigh in. You posted a lot of pics (which is awesome) but I'm not sure where to start. Maybe pick a spread and we can go from there. I'm going to be picky as hell, but I'm not trying to be mean, just helpful.

I was struggling with tables on Affinity yesterday, but I'm day 1 essentially in the tool. I'll look for a tutorial tonight.
It all depends on what you're trying to do. I use tables a lot for layout because they are so cosy and contained, but it also took me a hot minute to figure out how to get the results I wanted for a given use case.
