Building charcters with NPC levels.

I like the idea of giving one or more levels of npc classes to add durability and distinctiveness while still enjoying that "explore the PC class from the ground up" feeling. IMC I don't worry about XP simply because I often don't award it (just level as needed).

Here's how I would handle this: Use the Gestalt rules from Arcana Unearthed (or is it UA?).

Basically, they work the same as 2nd Edition Multiclassing - you get whichever is best out of the two classes that make up your Gestalt.

For Instance:

A Gestalt Fighter 1 / Expert 1 would have: 10 hp, +2 Fort Save, +2 Will Save, +1 BAB, 6+Int mod x4 skill points, a class skill list comprised of all Fighter class skills and 10 additional skills of the character's choice, 1 bonus feat, and Fighter weapon and Armor proficiencies.

Just curious, would it be better to go with a free heritage/background bonus feat instead of the free npc level?
