Burst/Blast Templates...

For squares, I think a cheap metal rod (coat hanger) and a pair of pliers would be easy enough to do. Most hardware stores would carry such things. Although, those prices for the plastic ones seem reasonable enough to me.

Bending coat hangers so they are square and flat is not as easy as one might think (speaking from experience). I will say that the 3.5 ones are life savers... for 4E I am still not sure. We have found that a simple Post-It stick up happens to be 3 inches square and holds it's position nicely on the battlemat.

I managed to find a learning supplies shop that sold a box of 200 1-inch square transparent plastic tiles in various colours for the equivalent of about US$10 in the local currency. That and a roll of sticky tape will get me plenty of burst/blast templates! ;) You might want to root around in your local toy shop, crafts shop or art supplies shop to see if you can find something similar.

Hmm. I thought templates in 4E were useless because you have to count the squares around obstacles (like walls). Doesn't this cause the area to become something other than a square?

For a cheap and quick option....

My group bought a set of colored thin plastic binder pockets from an office supply store. Then we just cut whatever size squares we needed. When someone has a power they can grab the right size square and measure or place it on the board if the effect will stay. They are generally transparent so for full turn powers you can put them on the battle map and still see the grid right through them. Minis sit right on top of them but everyone knows that an affect is happening there.

We picked up a pack that was a variety of colors so we can have multiple effects on the board at one time without any problem, we just grab two different color squares and away we go.

I think a package of 10 binder pockets cost all of 5 bucks, and gave us multiple copies of almost all our template sizes, so it's pretty hard to beat the price.

For the templates and condition tiles in the posted link above, what are they made of? Is it plastic or heavy cardstock? I'm interested in getting some, but I'd like to find out.

Hmm... i was going to plunk down the money for the squares, but i think i like your idea better.

Well I've only seen the templates, but I assume the condition tiles are made of the same material.

The templates are like... eh kind of an in between plastic and heavy cardstock if you can imagine that? They might be entirely made out of thin plastic, but I couldn't tell. They were better quality then I thought when I first saw them if that helps?

Seems like you wouldn't need to worry about spilling crap on them, but you might not want to just toss them in your bag. (They seemed sturdy enough, but I imagine heavy books smashing against tghem could do some damage.)

I'm thinking I will pick up a set of those ondition markers sometime soon.
