Buying art

Indeed... but I would add one caveat. Anyone looking for free art should just skip that forum all together and save themselves the trouble of being lectured.
Well this thread is titled Buying Art. So I assumed the original poster wouldn't go over there asking for freebies. But, you are right they are a militant bunch over there.

Well, it might be seen as... uncharitable... by some people but not only does it mean that the regulars aren't harassed by people trying to scam for art it also means, more importantly for publishers, that paying offers aren't lost in the noise.

I know I found a couple of up and coming types over there that do fantastic work. It's a great place to find freelancers both tried and new.

huh!?

color, $80??? what? *cough* *hack* *wheeze*

b&w is $100 pro-rated (ie, $50 half-page, $25 quarter page) for most small publishers. At that rate though your mostly going to get artists who are just trying to get exposure.

I can't imaging getting a good color cover for less than $350, without some additional benefits thrown in.

Just my 2 cents.

I know publishers and artists who agree to cover art for $75 to $100.

What I want ot know is, who retains ownership of the interior art.

I've had artists tell me that the artist retains the rights, and the publisher only buys the right to publish it one time ($25 for 1/4 page B&W). But I have met other artists who operated under the assumption that the publisher was buying ownership of the image for $25.

Which is the standard practice??

Standard practice is to purchase print rights not outright ownership of the work.

GOOD art...

I said good color art for under $350. Of course in RPG's most people consider "good" to be "my kid brother who's a really, really, good artist because he draws better than you". So my discerning the difference may be a moot point.

RPG's have the worst terms of any industry, when you take into account the rates. In general the publisher gets to keep ALL printing rights, but most will allow the artist to share rights to print promotional material like posters and coffee mugs with the art. But, at least the artist usually gets to keep the original.

In most industries the artists sells first[/] time printing rights only. The client has to pay for additional printing rights if they want to use it again.
