Buying off ecl

A character in my group died, and the player now decided to play an aasimar cleric. The lowest level is 12, so that is the level he will start at. Since he is an aasimar, he will start at 11th level with the minimum needed xp, but with money as a 12th level character. If we use the rules in unearthed arcana, and buys off the ECL.. he will start with 3000 xp from 12th level, but money for an 11th lvl character.

Am I right in all my assumptions? The difference in money from 11th to 12th is 22,000 gold.. quite the jump actually.. is this worth it?

I think your assumptions are correct. Whether it is worth it... reverse the question: would you pay 22000 gp to raise a level?

OK for option one, you start with the xp for char lvl 12, but because of ECL only have 11 character lvls. You also start with the gold for a 12th lvl character.

for option 2 in theory you start at 12th -3000 xp. I think in theory that as an 11th lvl chr you would indead start with the gold of an 11th lvl character, but if I were GM i'd give you the gold as 12th

in fact as a gm i'd give you the xp and gold of 12th and let you do waht you wanted with it, including buying of ECL and creating items.

That is quite liberal.. I tend to stick to the rules in most cases, but I think I will let him start with 12th level money and 3000 xp to 12th level...

He is at 12th level -3000 XP.

You give the starting numbers to the player, they spend it as they see fit. You don't pick numbers then adjust them.

Or would you force a wizard who made an item to have the money of a level 11 character also?

By the rules I believe he would start with a ECL of 11 if he took the buyback at 3, since ECL determines starting cash. So his starting money would be that of any 11th lvl toon. Or he could start at 12 and never get another shot at the buyback.

All in all, I would just give him start him at 12 (w/ buyback) with lvl12 cash and be done with it. The 3k exp isnt big enough deal to warrent the hit.

Well, if he took the buyback at 3, how many extra XP will he get for being lower-level than the rest of the party? If he's lower level, he gets more XP, which should probably catch him up almost entirely by the time 9 more levels pass, particularly if the party fights a few high-EL encounters just when he's on the verge of going up a level and the rest of the party has just gone up a level.

In other words, it's not worth worrying about. Too many random factors come into play, and so it's best to just split the difference by letting him start at level 11 with level 12 gear.

I agree. As i said, I would spot him the 3k exp and start him at 12 with the buyout spent and lvl 12 gold. I might change my mind it it was a +2 LA race, but I wouldnt haggle over the exp for most +1 LA races since the abilites shouldnt make that much of a differnce in a 12th lvl game.

But then we always start at 20% exp into the level incase someone wanted to start with some exp spent on items, permancies, buyouts, etc...

But by the rules, I do think it would be 11th with 11th cash.

No, that's not quite right. When creating a new character, they are provided with a set amount of XP and gold. In this case, equivalent to a 12th level character: 66,000 XP and 88,000 gp. What that payer decides to do with their XP and gold is entirely up to them.

If the player decides they want to play an Aasimar Cleric and want to buy off their +1 LA, they expend 3,000 XP. The character then starts the game at 11th level and at 63,000 XP. The same method is used for characters who start the game as item crafters and expend XP and gold to create magic items before game-play starts for the new character.
