Buying WotC Products

I haven't bought anything from Wizards since 3.5 debuted. Nope take that back. Bought the Dragonlance hardcover...and that sealed the deal AFAIC.

Not that I'm "boycotting" them per-se, just that they don't ptoduce books I want to buy anymore...haven't for a long time...and for 2.5 years I was buying everything from WOTC. Dropped my Dungeon & Dragon subs too.

I would like to pick up Eberron, and the modules if they are good. I was going to pick up the basic set, but not after I found out it only progressed to 2nd level characters.

I rarely buy gaming products these days..I've got shelves full of stuff I'll never use, and most of what I see these days I have no use for (splats, "crunchy books")

I'll be picking up Castles & Crusades, and I always throw a few dollars Necromancer's way....they make the kind of products I like...Judges Guild, good modules, etc. I'd like to try some of the Goodman modules too, but no-one 'round here carries them, and barring 2 or 3 company's products, I never buy without browsing these days.

I usually buy their products, although lately I've been buying less and less of d20 stuff in general. Usually I buy WotC products because they appeal to me. Their material is easily cannabalized into my hodge-podge homeworld. I find that less true of other d20 publishers... in general.

I regret getting a few books and they certainly have made some... questionable choices, but overall they still impress me.

If Washington were hit by a meteor right now, Hasbro would still own D&D. I doubt anyone here really wants to think about what Hasbro would do to D&D without Wizards of the Coast.

This is something that has come up in my gaming group before. After the initial shock wore off, realization would set in. We possess the rule books, the magazines, the supplements. Even if there were no more new D&D rulebooks published by Wizards, Malhavoc, Bastion Press, or anyone else for that matter, the cold hard truth is WE DON'T REALLY NEED THEM. Sure, I spend a lot of money on their products, and will do so as long as they publish things I can use. But we, as players, DM's, writers, artists, and actors (which is, after all, what we are) are limited ONLY by our own imaginations. With all the material that currently exists, and the as yet untapped depths of our own imaginings, we could continue to create and play endless adventures with the books we already possess.

So I was wondering how many people, like me, buy about 90% or more of WotC's products (only D&D, not Star Wars or D20 modern), how many buy only what they think will interest them, and how many people are boycotting WotC, for one reason or another.

I realized I forgot to answer the original question - one sad thing about becoming a publisher is that now that gaming has become a business for me, I don't buy anything I can't justify as a business expense. I think Wizards is still putting out some great books - Draconomicon had me really looking forward to Librus Mortis - but when someone who writes for Wizards offered to trade some copies of their books for a Masters and Minions deluxe set, I had to say no, I really need you to give me cash so I can try to pay for my next print run! It was a tough decision, believe me...

Mostly WOTC stuff so far, just because that's the only stuff that I can be relatively sure will be allowed in any particular gaming group.

I'm trying to branch out though. Have my eyes on Grim Tales and Midnight, and I just got DarkLore.

I just haven't been able to bring myself to invest too much in third-party class and player option books yet, since I never know if I'll be able to use them.

Wow; you really give a lot! ;)
To d20? Hell yeah. It's got the goods.

And I keep wondering WHY people think if WotC folded up that the SRD would die? It will NEVER die. (Cause if nothing else I"ll buy it! :P )

Due to the recent rant exposing WotC's (and other d20 manufacturer's) corporate greed, I'm only gonna buy Monte Cook's products from now on. :p

In fact, I'm going to convert to Arcana Unearthed.

Weirdest. Reason. To. BoyCott. Ever.

You think Malhavoc and S&SS don't have greed, to a degree? Unless they renounce all material possessions and go on a pilgrimage, I suspect they're in the same business as WotC.

Making money. :)

I like money, I want some. I am greedy.

There are companies MORE despicable than WotC could ever try to be, but we don't try to sling mud here. Keep it civil and all that jazz. ;)

I buy most of WotC's D&D stuff. Probably not 90%, but in the ballpark.

I seem to buy a lot less 3rd party stuff in recent months. Not by any design or plan, there just seems to be a lot more 3rd party stuff going into niche areas that don't appeal to me.

WotC

If WotC puts out a D&D book, I get it.

OH, no, I'm the 90% crowd. I'm just not finding Eberron my cup of tea, so I'm not supporting that.

Star Wars I have a very, very small interest in and got the core book, the campaign guide and 1 adventure. It stops there.

But their D&D books are perfect for my applications. I'm one of the demographic they write for, and get a kick out of the toolbox style approach without loads of useless fluff telling me how/what/where/why to run my game.

On the other hand, folks who complain WotC D&D books lost their soul, check out Races of Stone. Utterly impressive, entertaining writing, and half the book has no rules whatsoever. Inspiring reading for players, and a huge aid to DMs too.
