C&C is not just for old school gaming!

For me C&C is before all old-school D&D, because of the classes (paladins, clerics, etc.), same spells, etc., and compatibility with ancient versions of D&D. Otherwise, due to the classes, D&D-like magic, etc., I see C&C for use with pure fantasy settings (in the sense of medieval like fantasy). As for me Eberron and Dragonstar aren't "pure fantasy", I don't think C&C fit very well. In fact, for Eberron or Dragonstar, I would much prefer True20, in that True20 got rid of those fantasy archetypes (paladins, clerics, etc.), and of the fantasy looking spells.

As a point of interest, the new Star Wars Saga Edition is going to use a skill system remarkably similar to how the C&C system handles skills:

C&C: Skill DC vs. 1d20 + Ability mod + 6 if prime ability and + level

SWSE: Skill DC vs. 1d20 + Ability mod + 5 if trained and + 1/2 level
Seems that I am going to buy that game after all...

Ordered my copies of the PHB and the Monster & Treasure books. Do I really, really need the Castle Keepers guide? Or can the game run very well without it?
You don't need it (no one is using it, yet, since it isn't out).
