C&C -worth 2hour trip? PH or Box?

First Post
I've played maybe 3 times in the past year and a half and am goin to jump back in with C&C (I think). NOT my FLGS is about 2 hours round trip from the house and has a numberd box set in and the players handbook.
Worth the trip?
Handbook or box set? (I dont care about collectibilty so numbered does not matter)
Also is it really that easy to convert 1st edition stuff?

1st ed. stuff easy to convert. Treasure is pretty much unchanged. Monsters you flip the AC (subrtract from 20) and decide if the monster should have physical primes, mental primes, both (rare) or neither (also rare). Primes are what the monster is good at. PC's also get primes, but can mix them up a bit more. You'll see.

Given that you have 1st ed. stuff, I highly recommend the players handbook. And yes, it is worth the trip, at least in my eyes.

I would suggest the Player's Handbook. Then, you could use easily much of the AD&D 1e and 2e material you own (including the DMG).

Wouldn't you know it, I got all the way up there and they were out of hte PH, they will hold one for me with the next order. I did get the Box set

Well the box set is quite cute!

Also, unlike the PHB, the box set covers monsters and treasures, and gives you a basic adventure.

If you are eager to get going, you could easily start a campaign with the box set. It is completely compatible with the PHB. (Though, of course, your players will initially be limited to fighters, wizards, clerics, and rogues.)

Also, the TLG site has some free stuff to download (character sheets, monsters, an adventure).

Have fun!

Damn, you should have had them hold a PHB for you. The PHB has the newest rules that are being published at this time by TLG and more classes/higher level advancement. Still, the box set *is* cute, and has a great many of the rules. It is perfectly acceptable to run an old 1e module with.

You can order the PHB from Troll Lords - they said only a couple of days ago that they still have some in stock.

I don't have the box set (I've seriously considered buying it just as a stopgap until M&T comes out), but the PHB definitely has more stuff in it - character classes, etc.

Well, if you're on the net, why drive two hours for anything? Now admidedly, I've gone about an hour and a half to go to a good steak joint outside IL but that's about it...

Actually, if it's a round trip, I'd say yes.
But I'd still order it on the net rather than take a two-hour trip. Although I just got a new van, and it's fun to drive. Much better than the '92 vintage I was driving before.
