[CA] Vitriolic Sphere - no save?

First Post
Does the spell Vitriolic Sphere have any save for the initial (15d4) damage?

I don't think so, just making sure... :)

No.

You deal your 15d4 then they get a Ref save to avoid the continuing damage.

On round 2, you deal 5(?)d4 continuing damage, Save for Half. If you save, it completely negates the third round of damage.

Round 3, if you failed both your round 1 and round 2 saves, you take 3d4, save for half.

utterly correct

ps. i belive its 6d4 in the 2nd round. the spelldescription tells this.

As an aside, does empowering this spell increase the damage output in each round or just the first? I assume that it's each round since neither the feat nor the spell say anything to the contrary.

This would cause 22d4 on the first round, 9d4 on the second round, and 4d4 on the third round... pretty good for a 6th level spell! The "no save" part is icing on the cake.

It would be a 7th level spell, as it is 5th level to begin with. Unless you are a 10th level Incantatrix or something. ;)

But other than that (and the slightly nitpicky part, that it's (15d4)x1.5 not (15x1.5)d4), yes, all the dice rolls do get multiplied as you say.

Besides, I think the no save part is rather a biggie, not just the icing. :)

My wife's sorcerer loves this spell. Of course, we were in an anti-vampire one-shot at the time.

Fortitude: no effect.
Will: it's a mind affecting, no effect.
Reflex: guess what! two leves of rogue and a huge dex, evasion, no effect.
Ranged touch: huge dex, no effect.

Vitriolic Sphere. For when you just want to deal damage.

the spell is on the powerfull side, due to 3 things
1 its Conjuration, so no SR
2 there is no safe on the initial dmg
3 its acid dmg, not the most common dmg, so not to manny are immume/resistant to it.
4 it is a dot (damage over time)

it has some downsides though
1 it does 1d4 dmg not 1d6
2 it has a small area of effect

as a 6th lvl spell i think it would be fine, the reason it is a 5th lvl spell imo is that its initial dmg is capped at 15d4, while as a 6th lvl spell it would probably cap at 20dx.
i think the designers thought the d4 instead of the d6 ofsetts the contineous dmg.

is it more powerfull than your average direct dmg evocation spell? yes.
is that weird? No.
Direct damage, arcane evocations are underpowerd, it would do the eventual 4th edition good to make direct damage arcane evocations 1d8/lvl, but that is an other story.

the spell is a good CA spell, in that it mekes mages less dependant of success on SR checks, is this a good thing? that depends if CA the only splat book you alow its verry verry bad, if you use all the splatbooks its a good thing.

Acid resistance isn't that uncommon, tho. All demons and devils have it, for example.
