CAdv on DriveThru - One small question

Dear All,

Just wanted to see whether anyone on these boards has actually purchased the pdf of CAdv on DriveThruRPG, and more specifically, whether the pdf allows the copying of text (as most d20 pdfs seem to). I ask this because I find that it's really only better for me to buy PDFs (instead of books) if I can cut-and-paste pieces into homebrew materials or adventures for ease of reference.

Thanks all!

I'd like to know this as well. I suspect that you can copy text, but when something is DRMed, you never know what sort of restrictions they might put on it ...

The default on Drivethru is that you can copy up to 10 sections of text in any 10-day period from their E-books. Some publishers have relaxed this limitation - I think both Malhavoc and Necromancer allow unlimited copying. I see no reason to believe that WOTC has done so.

That said, it's not like DRM is particularly difficult to get around, once you know the trick.

Maybe they should make an FAQ entry about that on the Drivethru page, so their customers can enjoy their products to the fullest. :p

I believe it's more of a 'hack' than a 'trick'. It's not something that they want to publish. I don't like DRM and haven't purchased any DRM products.

I've downloaded a bunch of the free stuff Drivethru RPG offers. I don't know if it also is DRM'ed but I have yet to see what the big deal is about that. What does DRM do, exactly?

Digital Rights Management is (I think) what it stands for. It's a system designed to prevent pirating, and has lots of ups and downs. Especially downs, IMO.

To use it, you need to connect to Adobe.com (if your computer can't do it, you're out of luck) so it can confirm the product (or something along those lines). I heard it uses MSN Passport to do this, which by itself upset some customers.

Once you have the product, there are limits to how many times you can copy it or how much you can print. You may also have trouble copy-and-pasting. In short, anything you could do to replicate the product (or pieces thereof) and give to your friends is restricted.

However, this is a problem for anyone who wants to print part of the adventure or, indeed, the whole thing, so you can, you know, use it. You can't even copy and paste some DRM products to quote a line of text somewhere.

Ah. I see why I haven't had much problems then. Most of the stuff I have is rulebooks that I read on the computer and would be much too large to print off on my craptastic printer anyway. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Thanee - what is this 'hack'? I know it's probably not something you can post here but maybe you could email me?

I believe I heard that DTRPG's DRM only allowed 10 pages to be cut and pasted per 10 day perriod. I also believe Monte Cook got this waived for his Malhavok products on their. I couldn't say about WotC's ones or whether that restriction has been lifted in general on their products as I don't even get the free ones with DRM.
