Cadwallon

Rackham has put out a "Tactical RPG" called Cadwallon set in the Confrontation universe. Here is a description:

"Welcome to a city of legends...

Explore its ancient ruins and pierce their secrets... adventure is waiting for you.

Cadwallon is a role playing game played with miniatures. It lets you represent one of the heroes of a tight knit group of adventurers. Cadwallon is a rulebook that explains all aspects of this game where each gamer plays the role of a character taking part in exciting adventures in a medieval-fantasy city...

Once cursed and abandoned, Cadwallon was conquered by companies of mercenaries. Heirs to these adventurers eager for glory and riches, the free leaguers watch over the survival of the City of thieves.

Cadwallon is a tactical role playing game in the world of Confrontation ."

A friend of mine gets their Cry Havok publication and I have read some more fluff in it; but my question is about mechanics. What is the basic system like, etc?

So, anyone actually seen it or played it? I know its been out in French longer than in English, so even someone's experiances with the French version would be interesting.

Saw it at Gen Con.

It's available at Games Plus in Mt. Prospect.

It's a little too expensive for me at this moment due to just getting back from Gen Con and having a ton of stuff to read like Burning Empires, Ptlous, Rappan Athuk Reloaded as well as stuff I still need to write reviews of.

Maybe in a month or so.

It's on my list,

I'm a big Confrontation player and Cadwallon is drawn from the same universe. I can tell you that the setting is exceptional and you can get a decent sense of it from their website, www.rackham.fr. From what I've heard the actual system has gotten a rather luke warm reaction from folks who have read the French version. From what I've read you can play a character from any of the settings factions and as such use any model in their minis range to represent it.

I'm going to pick it up at the end of the month once I can afford it so maybe I've get motivated and write a review.

Jack.

From what I've read on various forums, the translation to English leaves a bit to be desired. I'm interested and will definantly give it a look over once my FLGS gets it in. The so-so reaction to the translation and the rules gives me pause though.

I almost bought it. I'm still thinking about it strongly. I am still considering which Confrontation army to choose so that may impact my decision re: Cadwallon. :D

I bought it, but haven't read thorugh much of it. the bit I did read through on the plane seemed to be poorly translated--then again I was on the plane home from GC and tired. I'll let you know more once I start readining it again.

I flipped through it at GP myself and I have to say that it is one damn fine looking book. Bit on the pricey side but all of their stuff tends to be that way. Didn't really read too much as I was more interested in the artwork on first glance. I'll have to look again.

Bought the French version. This first volume is just the Player's Guide - Be warned. The rules are sound and good (with the usual few houserules each and everyone will come up with to make the system theirs, I mean), if you like using miniatures in RPG (you can use the game without miniatures, but then, one would wonder why you actually use this game to play and not another more adapted to RPG without minis, to be frank).

The background of Cadwallon, the Free City defended by Leagues of mercenaries (usually the PCs among them), is rich and original: each district has a distinctive color, "aura" depending on who's the leader and what role the district serves for the City as a whole. It is complicated for beginners in RPG, and a bit confusing since the GM's volume, entitled "Secrets" in French, isn't out yet.

The organization of the book could have been much better (the background sandwiched between slices of rules, no index, that kind of annoying stuff). The book's layout and art is utterly gorgeous.

Conclusion in short: You like miniatures, in particular Confrontation/Rackham minis (you can use the game with other minis too of course, but then the game uses the races and creatures of Confrontation)? You like convoluted backgrounds? You like tactical rules and a blend between miniature gaming and fluffy RPG background/motivations for characters? Go for it.
You can't stand AOOs in D&D? You just dislike miniatures in your gaming? You want medieval, historical backgrounds? Chances are you won't like it.

Not sure about their system, but their artwork kicks some serious butt. That's one damn fine looking website. And the images they put up are awesome.

No idea if the game is good, but, damn, that's some great art.

I've got a few of the English issues of Cry Havoc and some of the translations in there are a bit iffy too. The background and factions in Confrontation are very interesting though. How much fluff is in the book?

Cheers
