Calendar Ideas

Hi all,

I'm going to finally get started on a calendar for a homebrew game. Just looking at reality of where our modern day calender comes from and how it evolved, I have more then a few ideas and notions about how to create it.

However, one question I had was how might a fantasy setting influence the creation and development of a calendar?

What unique aspects/ideas have you used in creating your own homebrewed calendars?

I'm just looking for some possible ideas to impliment to add some additional spice and flavor. For a little background, the area of this calendar will be a kingdom with the flavor of Rome in a polytheistic world, though this kingdom predominantly worships the LG god of the pantheon.

In general, I plan to name probably three months after saints and two or three months after former rulers (it is a fairly long standing kingdom). After that, I might sneak one or two other gods into the calendar (since the LG god has children and wives who would be honored in such a way, though part of the church is petitioning the king to change the name of one of these months after a recently annointed saint (which is causing the few followers of that god to be upset)). After that, I'm a little up in the air.

Any help is appreciated.

PS - I had originally intended this to be a general thread on calendars and such, but if anyone has an specific ideas for my setting, I'm more then welcome to them. Thanks!

a cursed month

Alo, mate!

I had a cursed city in a persian-style adventure where once a year the city fell under the shadow of darkness (clouds, not eclipse) for a week. During this week the citizens became twisted, evil versions of themselves and did all kinds of dastardly things. The twist is, they know about the curse, and spend much effort preparing for it and minimizing its impact in their lives. Still, the Shadow of Azhi'dahaka affects them greatly.... So much so that the entire month around this week is named Azhi'dahaka (persian dragon at the base of world tree in myths).
If you're running a roman empire, there probably are competing calendars (along with their corresponding cultures, religions and languages). That could be a fun curveball!
