Call of Cthulhu D20: is it worth it?

This book is 40 bucks, 55 in Canada, but who can read in Canada anyhow? Its nice looking, has a good feel to it; nice heft, texture and firm binding. The cover art is pretty. the inside art is evocative. the colour text is nice as are someof the campaign ideas.

Its fricking expensive, i have paid less for college Text books. It is nice looking......if i were playing Hackthulhu. The cover art looks like it came from the Necronomicon featured in the Evil Dead trilogy. Creepy but Campy. The inner art reminds me of an X-Files Episode, one of those from the crappy seasons that came after year 3. I hated the colour art for the monsters, petersons was waaaaaay better (a COC colour monster guide).
The colour (flavour) text is pretty darn good, particularly for first time readers. The Campaign advice is really great too!

But i wonder why we are given so many different guns that possess the same stats. Why do the tables in this book remind of of an esoteric First Edition D&D game?
I bought to book because i am a Lovecraft Nut as are my players. that's right i bought it for the stats. i wonder if that was such a wise idea as it seems Cthulhu is vastly underpowerd in this version.

I winced when i saw Nyarlathotep's stats. They are far better than Cthulhu's, whish is ok if you are ina Derlethian universe. To remain true to the books Cthulhu should be on par with Nyar, Eclipsed only by Azathoth, Shub, and Yog.
oh well, a minor quibble.

In my view this books is not worth 40 bucks. not even close. go buy the Chaosium 5th Edition hardback, its cheaper and pretty easy to convert if you have any expereince with the two systems.
Hell go all out and by the leather bound oen from Chaosium, its even prettier....yet more expensive..but its leather!! maybe even human flesh!!

I'm happy with my purchase (but I did get lucky and get a signed one). I know RPG books are expensive and d20 is on the higher end. Heck, I buy from another company and I get 120pg books for 8$ and 320pg books for 25$. They aren't hardbound though.

I'm happy with the CoC book. And I doubt I'll be using it anytime soon. I think they did a great job with it and for me it was money well spent.

I must agree with the others. d20 Cthulhu is certainly worth purchasing. I have played the old Cthulhu for many many years, and I have loved it. It is a clunky, beat up '85 Ford Prelude with a nice paint job but crappy interior. The new d20 Cthulhu is a 2002 Mustang, lowered and with chrome rims.

Gaudy? Perhaps. But man does she purrrrrrr like a kitten.

What?!?

Sigh.

Well, I'll spare you...for the time being.

But I expect to be shoe-horned in at the earliest opportunity.

I could always make...an appearance.

:D

<slithers out from beneath Cthulhu's monstrous tentacle>

Ugghh... Yes, Lord. Ftagn and all that. It's called, "What Rough Beast" in the IC board. I shall... Unnhhh... Add you to the list....

<crawls away, a broken man>

Very good.

I should have known that an Iconics game would be started up sooner or later...you germs are very ingenious...in your own microbial way.
