Calling all Gamers! I need some names that will, someday, destroy the world!

I like the idea of names disappearing from the list on their own. The pc's actions can assist this to come about. It they can stop the duke from being assassinated, his only son will never join the bloody knives guild seeking revenge, rise to the top of the guild and threaten to take over the world.

Get the party to know the duke's son early on where they like the guy, and now instead of just killing him for crimes as of yet committed they can help him stay on the other path, unless everyone is on the mindset of changing fate and butterfly effects.

This artifact may also have agents of the god of fate, raven queen, interacting.

Whiskers - a catfolk mystic who have found a way to cheat death (yeah, he's got 9 lives now, will be tough to scrap from The List)

I like the idea of the PCs taking care of a threat, seeing it disappear from the list, then seeing it appear again a few gaming sessions later as the character is reincarnated or escapes from prison or whatnot. This could become a running theme where the same name keeps appearing again and again and it's a challenge for the PCs to find a way to keep this name from coming back.

If you're just looking for names to fill the list you could use a random name generator like one of these:

Another interesting thing to do with this is to have a succession of names on he list...

For Duke's name is on the list. After the PCs help his son assassinate him, the son's name appears. If the PCs take him down, a distantly related baron steps up as Duke, and his name appears on the list... The tricky thing being whoever happens to be Duke at that moment is the person on the list. The person is less important than the political position.

For that matter, the name on the list could simply be "Duke of Loamshire" no matter how many Dukes of Loamshire the PCs kill, the title stays on the list... They instead have to find a way to eliminate the position itself. Convincing the Duke to change the name of the province from Loamshire to Middlehampton, for example, might work -- as would convincing him to declare independence and become the "King of Loamshire".

Oh, that'll go over real well. :)

Of course, that's the whole point... In D&D killing is an easy solution, especially in response to a list like this.

This sort of situation changes things up, briefly throws the players the players for a loop, and encourages them to think outside the box for a little bit. More importantly, it keeps what amounts to a long list of repetitive assassinations interesting by breaking up the routine.

Besides, it's partly up to the DM to make certain the PCs' plans have at least a small chance of success...

PCs: "Yeah, we killed your last three predecessors, but we're not going to do that you. We think you should rebel and try to become king!"

Duke: "Kadigan the First, King of Loamshire? Hmmmm... I think I like sound of that. It wouldn't be easy, though. I'd first have to gain the support of the local nobility. Perhaps you could help me out -- the rewards would be great, should I succeed."

love it when the players get ethical problems so *joink*

and what about Pearl the Paladin (who by slaying one evil necromancer gives room to the apprentis who will grow to kill the world)
off coures at the same time the apprentis should apper
Weasel the apprentis (now the players can chose to find the famous paladin and kill her, or use alot of time to track down the uknown aprentis any how killing one removes both names)

it would be best to have the players see both names appering at the same time so they at least have a chance of figuring out a connection.

Thorgar the Childeater - does exactly what it says on the tin.

The Ebondark Forest - A forest treated as a singular entity perhaps? There is a forest spirit in one of the MMs. The PCs could destroy the forest or chose to try to redeem it, etc.

Heironeous - Play up for a situation where Heironeous must die so the world might live. Perhaps he must commit some grievous evil action so the world might live, or some god must and he is trying to prevent them?

The Crow King

The Long Fingered Man - A kind of boogey man that does not actually exist save as a myth. Perhaps the act of trying to eliminate it somehow imbues it with a consciousness - thanks to a bungling high level wizard trying to help the PCs maybe? Think Terry Pratchett's Hogfather sprinkled liberally with a dose of Nightmare on Elm Street. Create creepy little childrens songs and sing them to your PCs in a vacant childish voice with the lights out.

Edith Keeler?

Brilliant!

Sensei T'ang, Keeper of the Book of Truth, known to be one of the holiest Monks in the world. (Yes, he's taken VoP, maybe even Spellfire, if it exists in the campaign.). He's on the list because at some point, he will start up a cause that will lead to a Crusade that will have unforseen repercussions.

Maybe its even about some List of people destined to destroy the world...

(Y'see, there's more than one List, because there is some Being out there who, upon learning of the original list, generated a few counterfeit ones of Its own.)
