I'm a relatively new (~2+ years) DM currently running two different homebrew campaigns set (loosely) in different areas of the Forgotten Realms. For the more recent one, I found the campaign guide from the D&D Next "Murder in Baldur's Gate" adventure to be a fantastic resource, giving lots of details to flesh out the city as a living, breathing place that I'm able to reference and build on for my players without having to come up with everything from scratch. I've found some of the details from the Out of the Abyss adventure to be similarly useful as I homebrew adventures in the Underdark, and the monster details in VGtM have been excellent as well.
For those familiar with previous editions, are there other specific supplements you all would recommend in a similar vein of rules-agnostic "campaign settings"? I'd even be interested in any you found particularly good that weren't Forgotten Realms, since the homebrew world we've got going could very easily incorporate from other established settings if they had something good to offer.
Thanks in advance!
