Campaign Settings you like

Absolute #1 is Greyhawk, but I tend to customize a bit and use it near-canonish.

Other greats are Dark Sun and Planescape, but I rarely (if ever) play them.

Roughly in order;

Eberron - I'm a supernerd with regards to Eberron. My favorite setting.
Day After Ragnarok - It's like a post-apocalyptic Hellboy-meets-Conan setting set during WWII. Great.
Dark Sun - love the vibe of the world. I missed it during 2e and was so jazzed it was released for 4e you wouldn't believe it.
Gamma World - the new version is so much fun; I have a friend that played the first edition of the game and I think he'll love it.
Amethyst - Just got this one. It's shaping up to be pretty cool.

I have always used homebrew worlds. However, lately I have been on a kick making homebrew worlds that steal ideas from published settings. I believe the homebrew world my group is in the process of creating should stand the test of time though.

As for published settings, I have always been fond of Council of Wyrms. I have often stolen info from Forgotten Realms and to me, the classic setting is Dragonlance. In my mind, when I think of DnD, I think of what Krynn is like.

The Old World for WFRP is definitely my favorite published setting. Dark Fantasy meets Cthulhu.

I also really like R.E. Howard's Hyboria setting because I enjoy the Swords & Sorcery genre alot.

Although I haven't played DnD since the days of 2e, I used to really like the Greyhawk setting. I tried several of the other published settings, but always went back to Greyhawk.

When I got 4E I was rather enthusiastic about using the 'implied setting' to construct a homebrew campaign setting: Legends of the Kingdom of Epic Adventure Quest.

That aside, I have particular affection for these:

Shadowrun: When I first heard of this game and its diabolic melding of cyberpunk and fantasy, I thought "that sounds kinda silly". And it is, but the more of the setting I read about and think about, the more I love it.

Edge of Midnight: A lovely little noir setting, in a world where history stops a few decades ago at the time of the 'White Light', and people who concentrate hard enough on science can control the very laws of physics...

What he said, at least for D&D. I've always found Greyhawk to be the best mix of sword-and-sorcery "salty" with high fantasy "sweet". The fact that it's inherently designed to be a setting in which dungeons make sense (after a fashion) make it work well for a campaign, as well.

I also enjoy Empire-era Star Wars.

My top 5 RPG Settings

  1. Theah for 7th Sea
  2. Dark Sun for Dungeons and Dragons
  3. Rokugan from Legend of the Five Rings
  4. Dragonlance for Dungeons and Dragons
  5. Star Wars (any era) for the numerous Star Wars RPGs

My number one D&D setting is;
the Scarred Lands

followed by;
Al-Qadim
Kara-Tur
Golarion
Greyhawk
the implied Freeport setting

I also am quite fond of the Trinity setting, which is wide enough to allow for all sorts of sci-fi gaming, and the version of the World of Darkness that had Sons of Ether, Men in Black, Followers of Set, etc.

From the description of Jakandor mentioned upthread, it sounds like something I've got to add to my collection!
