2003: When diplomacy fails and subterfuge will no longer stall the invasion of Iraq by the united states, Saddam orders the launch of 5 secret missiles purchased from the decaying soviet union. Targets include the capitals of the United Stares, England, China, and Israel with the final missile targeting the oil fields in Kuwait. Moments after the launch Most of the nuclear countries in the world innate assured mutual destruction plans and launch their entire stockpile of weapons.
99% of the human population is destroyed is the massive firestorm brought about by the weapons of the atom. The other 1% is frozen to death in the long atomic winter that follows. Fallout ravages the planet as the huge clouds of smoke and ash blot out the sun turning the earth into a snowy graveyard for mankind.
3003: for a thousand years the earth slumbered underneath a white blanket of snow and ice.
Soon after the thousandth anniversary of the destruction the clouds break and the earth begins to thaw.
4003: 2 eon’s post apocalypse the earth has been reborn. Life flourished in the pristine wilderness that has replaced mans jungles of concrete. Though there are many new species none has more than animal intelligence.
5003: (FR) several of the mages from silverymoon discover a method of establishing portals on other planets. Their discovery leads them to begin charting the galaxy through high power divination spells.
Soon after this effort begins a spy in the college leaks the information and method to the priesthood of Shar. Shar orders her priests to begin searching for other planets in the hopes that they will find something that they can use against mystra and selune.
Shar’s faction discovers the sol system and claims it as her own. Knowing that mystra will attempt to take the planet as her own Shar orders the immediate establishment of a base from which her followers can protect the planet. The Citadel of Night is built on the pre cataclysm site of New York. The followers of Shar manage to keep the existence of sol a secret for several years, during which time they expand their control of the area around the citadel to include most of the eastern seaboard. A total of 12 cities are built most of which are heavily fortified with troops.
5013: Ten years after the initial colonization of sol mystra’s clergy discovers the sol system and the occupation of it by the forces of Shar. The Harper’s call together the first ever meeting of the council of lords at silverymoon. In attendance are all of the lords of water deep, the king of mithril hall, the king of cormyr as well as several other major lords and ladies. So formidable is the assembled host that no less that 5 gods have avatars in attendance.
The assembled lords agree that the forces of evil cannot be allowed to maintain their grip on this vast source of resources. Teams of powerful adventurers are gathered to travel to the New World and set up a base of operations from which the forces of Shar can be opposed.
Within a month the fortified city of Palanthas in under construction on the Old World site of the dfw area.
Chosen for its natural resources and proximity to several rivers the City is constructed with the aid of a group of greater earth elementals that had taken up residence in the area to feast on the natural oil deposits.
With the aid of the elementals and a bit of magic the city is operational within months.
Charter from the conference of lords establishes the city government as a military outpost.
Heavy recruitment begins in the forgotten realms for the covert war between the gods.
