Campaigning in Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun

I was wondering if anyone else here on the boards has run or participated in a campaign based off of Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series (Shadow of the Torturer/Claw of the Conciliator, etc.)?

Our DM currently is running us through a campaign set on Urth. We're having fun so far, but it bothers me that I don't know more about the world and the general feeling for the setting. I've picked up the first two books, but I am having a hard time getting through them.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried this setting (seems to me that it is faintly similar to Eberron) and what their impressions of the campaign were. Also, I'd like to get your thoughts on the general feeling of this setting.

Thanks in advance!

I know there is a GURPS supplement for it, but I'm not sure how good it is (haven't read it). Then again, Wolfe himself was pretty sparse and haphazard with "setting material", even noting that Severian often gave quite random names to arms & armour.

Still, it would be a fascinating world to play in -- hmm, I wonder if everyone would have Low Light Vision...?

Thanks for the information. My DM will appreciate that, if I can still find it.

It was really quite good. You might want to look @ Steve Jackson's site to see if Warehouse 23 has any copies lying around. Other than that, check the web for used game stores throughout the country.

G'day

Apart from adding my chime to the chorus pointing out the existence of GURPS New Sun, I'll just say that Wolfe described an extensive and very varied commonwealth, but only detailed those very few places that Severian visited. You are going to need a GM who is pretty good at making up extra detail in the style of Gene Wolfe. When you have finished with him or her, please send him or her here.

Another point: each of the volumes of the Book of the New Sun has a essay in the back, discussing some subject such as weapons and troops types. You can read those essays without spoiling the ending of the book. In fact, I find that you can pretty much read one of Gene Wolfe's books without spoiling the book.

Good luck! Keep your Story Hour up to date!

That's kind of like saying, "You are going to need a GM who is pretty good at making up extra detail in the style of Herman Melville" ;-)

Yeah. You can send that one here when you are done with him or her, too.
