Can a PC get threathening reach?

Dunamin

First Post
I'm making a spear-wielding fighter as my first PC. Since the longspear has reach and the fighter is effective at containing nearby foes, it would be awesome with threathening reach (being able to take AOs on all foes within reach).

Is it possible?

Nope, sorry. "You can still make opportunity attacks against adjacent opponents only." from the description of reach in the PHB, p217.

Something interesting about Threatening Reach; I don't think it works with regards to enemies approaching you.

Moving away, yes. But ye olde 3e "I charge the monster" "It gets an AoO on you cuz it has reach" is gone.

I was more thinking by way of feats, magic items, or such.

So pikes no longer break a lance charge. :D

I don't really want a AoO from this didn't like them since combat and tactics while fighting giants didn't like them in 3e. But a immediate action so you hit first seems reasonable for reach. Does 4e give something like that?

I'd say the PHB 'reach' weapons are only just long enough to have reach, but not so long to be penalized in dungeon environments. The super long weapons on the other hand will recieve house rules that will make them useful in a packed formation where everyone is wielding the same weapon.

Yeah, it is a band aid for a bullet wound, but for the way 4e has gone, it will do.
