Can a sword and shield fighter make a natural weapon slam attack in the same round?

A slam is different than an unarmed strike.

So while it is possible to combine natural attacks with manufactured weapons it should not be possible to make a slam wattack when wielding a shield and sword - unless the shiled and/or sword entry specifically stated you could.

Slam does not specifically allow use of any part of the body, like unarmed strike does.

Can a fighter armed with a sword and shield still make a natural weapon slam attack in the same round without dropping anything? By definition, a slam attack requires an appendage. That says nothing about needing a free hand. My thought is that I could attack with a one-handed weapon, and then deal a natural weapon slam attack with an elbow (albeit with a -5 secondary attack modifier). Is that possible? Heck, a leg counts as an appendage.

Elbow?

Head-butt 'em!

I would not allow it. A slam attack uses a free appendage, and the warforged only has two of those: his arms. All monster entries I know do not slam attacks when your hands are occupied with normal weapons. Further the section on natural attacks sugggests

"The number of attacks a creature can make with its natural weapons depends on the type of the attack—generally, a creature can make one bite attack, one attack per claw or tentacle, one gore attack, one sting attack, or one slam attack (although Large creatures with arms or arm-like limbs can make a slam attack with each arm)."

Which can really only be interpreted to mean that large creatures can "slam" with both arms, and medium or smaller with one arm per round. Unless the creature description explicitly says it slams with something other than its arms and can wield weapons, it can't.

There isn't a counterexample I'm aware of, it's common sense, and it matches the description of natural attacks:

You can't slam without a free arm.

Except if you're one of these guys:

The slam attack would be granted by the Strength Devotion feat in Complete Champion. The feat is not specific about how the slam attack is configured.
Then I'd assume it's an arm. It's not like you can go about flailing around your legs freely anyhow, which is really the only other option. But as already mentioned - all the books and examples all seem to assume slams are arms. Given the text and the flavor description, only full appendages are going to count (and again, examples back it up), and beyond arms, there's only legs, which are certainly not free for brute force usage.

No, he's still married to his first girlfriend ;)?

A better question: Could a kobold use his tail (with which he can't make a tail attack) for a slam attack?
