Can a Vampire Sorceror get the fiendish template

Sir ThornCrest

First Post
I am running an Undead Hunter campaign, and I was in need of a villian undead leader type. I know that outsiders cannot become Vamps but can a vamp thru some great evil service be granted the Fiendish template? As per BoVD if he did some great evil service for an evil god demon or devil this is a potential reward. But in this case is it possible?

That having been said however, I'd ignore this in my game if I had a good reason, but if you are a stickler for RAW, then no.

IIRC, couldn't you make a fiendish human who became a vampire? He'd end up being a "Medium Undead (augmented humanoid, human, extraplanar)", I believe.

no I tried that, ousiders will die if reduced to 0 not turn into vamp.

Apparently according to the rules an outsider cannot be turned into undead. I saw this brought up on a similiar thread.

By the way what is RAW stand for.

By RAW, in 3.5e, you can't. Fiendish template is an inherited template and thus can be gained only when something is born. Also, it cannot be applied to an undead.

But if you dare to use BoVD in your 3.5e campaign, do what you want to do as a DM.

But IMHO, this is not such a good idea. The benefits gained from fiendish template do not worth 2 levels for a vampire sorcerer. He may gain SR and some energy resistances. But so what? SR of 16 is not that much good for a CR 15 monster. For a spell caster, levels are more important as it determine his spell-casting abilities. And he is an undead. The total HD is very important to avoid being turned. Simple Vampire Sorcerer will be far much capable opponent.

Generally, no.

However, you're the DM. It's perfectly reasonable to rule that, through some service to a dark diety, a servant might be infused with some of its essence.

But a fiendish human wouldn't be an outsider.

Animals or vermin with this template become magical beasts, but otherwise the creature type is unchanged. Size is unchanged. Fiendish creatures encountered on the Material Plane have the extraplanar subtype.

See, a humaniod who gains the fiendish template is still humanoid.

RAW = "Rules As Written." That one threw me, too.

Anyways, who cares what the rules say in this case? If it's cool, do it.

I have to heartily endorse Piratecat here. When creating cool villains, I really would ignore race/class/template/any other kind of restriction if it helps him out. For example, my DM created a Fire Giant with the dwarven hammer thrower prestige class (normally restricted to dwarves). He was a great enemy.

No one said "That guy seems a lot like a Dwarven Hammer-Thrower. Illegal! The rules as written back me up. I demand that he go back to using a greatsword!" If I remember correctly, when he hit us with a cone of damage from a hammer throw we asked how a hammer did a cone of damage- it turned out it was really supposed to be a line of damage. Unless you have a particularly good reason (an exploding hammer), that would be a part of the rules you should leave as written.
