Can Allies Provide Cover?

In the MM2 there's a reference to a monster that can become hidden when it's using cover from allies.

I didn't realize that you could gain cover from allies. What's the rules there?

Creatures and Cover: When you make a ranged attack against an enemy and other enemies are in the way, your target has cover. Your allies never grant cover to your enemies, and neither allies nor enemies give cover against melee, close, or area
attacks.

Guess it's a monster thing :)

Not so much. It's not YOUR allies it's gaining cover from, it's ITS allies, or your enemies. It follows the rules you quoted just fine.

Is there a way to determine that? When you have cover, etc?

Do enemies provide cover?

It's all in the cover and concealment section of the combat chapter, along with a diagram illustrating some examples.

Briefly, your allies don't grant your enemies cover against your ranged attacks, but your allies do grant you cover against ranged attacks from your enemies. That applies to both player characters and monsters.
