Can any comic fans fill me in on current Marvel continuity?

I'm one of those people who got back into comics soly to read something by JOss Whedon. So, to go through all the comic book lingo, JOss Whedon's Xmen does not have much to do with the current storyline in Xmen?

For the last few years the X-titles generally have run independant of each other with only a fews nods to what's going on in the other titles.

For example in one title, there were a bunch of X-Men wandering europe getting involved with some popstar or one of their former members gone off the deep-end in Europe. While in another title, they were looking for some books while ending up in places like Australia. And another they were dealing with the ramifications that Genosha was nuked, prof X was outed as a mutant, the school just got hundreds of students, and that charley had an "evil twin".

I bought Josh Wheton's X-men and have a question. What happened to professor X? Is he dead?

Nope. He just showed up in the most recent issue (#10, IIRC), and will be in the upcoming issue as well, featuring very prominently. He is currently in Genosha, along with Magneto, and trying to help restore that island nation of mutants after it got nuked.
