Can contingency counter spell?

A Melee based PC/NPC would never run out of swings of the sword/axe/mace whatever, that's why there is no "reactive attack" feat, only AoO's.

Life sucks, then you learn to how play casters, then they die. :D
I just bugs me that a low DEX Wizard can react faster to an opposing spellcaster then an Uber-Dextrous thief (or similar)...

That's why you need to take 2 feats to be able to reactive counterspell. Very specialized, task spacific feats. Feats that might very well have been better spent on other things, such as meta-magic, or creation. If your Uber-Thief (or Uber similar) wants to counter a casters spell, make sure you're in range for the AoO to disrupt the caster's spell, Or take a few lvl's as a caster? Or employ a meat shield (body gaurd) to follow you around if you're worried about the damage. Or hire a full time mage-distractor like a, goblin, hive of bee's, orc, or a tossable dwarf. The feats, & basic counterspelling work just fine.

3 actually...
REACTIVE COUNTERSPELL [General]
You can react quickly to counterspells cast by opponents.
Prerequisites: Improved Counterspell, Improved Initiative.
Benefit: Once per round, you can counterspell an opponent’s spell even if you have not readied an action to do so. This counterspell action takes the place of your regular action for the round. You can’t use this feat when flat-footed.
Normal: Without this feat, you must ready an action each round you wish to use a counterspell (see the PH, page 152).

Very specialized, task spacific feats.

Well... 2 out of 3 anyway...

I am just trying to point out that a spellcaster has the option... through feats to act faster then a non-spellcaster... Under the official rules (before ELH anyway) a non-spellcaster can't act retroactively like this... even if he wanted to spend the feats.

Oops, forgot about Imp-Init. :) However my point still stands.

I know what your point is :)

And My point is this...
It is a very specialized abillity (feat), that can only be used at very spacific times. It is ballanced, & works well in the game, adding a new twist to spellcasting. Yes a spellcaster can, due to this feat, act more quickly then a non-spellcaster, against other spellcasters in a (very) few instances. But who cares! They can do allot of things that a non-spellcaster can't do. Fly, Fireballs, the never missing magic missile. Are you going to complain about that now?:)
Maybe in the future WotC will come out with a melee reactive feat? Untill then make a house rule melee feat to make yourself happy

Is the feat broken or is the counterspell action broken? I'm just asking because I see so many people confuse the two to the point that they don't even remember what they didn't like.

By the way. My mileage has been great with it. :D

It's the counterspell action that is broken.

If they would have made a reasonable counterspell action (i.e. one actually USED by people in the game), then they probably would have never thought of Improved Counterspell and Reactive Counterspell.

Yes, I love to take 2 or 3 feats, just to do something that I should have been able to do all along.

I can make myself happy without the use of any feats at all...

The thing I did do was not allow Reactive Counterspell at all, in favour of the readied action instead.

Please mikebr99 this is a 'family board' what you do to make yourself "Happy" ;) "without the use of any feats at all..." is nothing we need to know about. Won't someone please think of the children!:D;)
