Can Ethereal Clerics Rebuke/Command Undead?

Grundle

So all you undead heads out there...

Can a cleric on the ethereal plane command undead on the material plan? Clearly an ethereal cleric should be able to effect ghosts (who are always on the ethereal plane), but what about other kinds of undead like skeletons or zombies?

On the other side of the coin, can ghosts that are NOT manifested be turned by a cleric on the material plane?

I dont know why not. Negitive and Positive energys seem to move between plans or you couldnt turn non-capporial undead.

There is nothing in the turning rules that say you cant.

Simple answer: You can't turn undead on the material plane when you are ethereal because the undead must see you to be affected. And in fact you are invisible when you are ethereal at least to beings on the material plane.
Your ghost problem...when the ghost is on the same plane then you and is able to see you, he will be affected by your turning.

Remember, with the exception of ghosts, incorporeal undead have nothing to do with the Ethereal Plane. They're still on the Material Plane; they're just incorporeal.

The general rule is that nothing can affect creatures on the Material Plane from the Ethereal Plane. The reverse is not true - Force Effects and Gaze Attacks on the Material Plane can affect Ethereal Creatures.

Your Ethereal cleric can't turn anything except a ghost.

Ah this is true.

I was not thinking about them not seeing you.

It's debatable as to whether you actually need to be seen to turn undead.

If they have total cover relative to you, you can't turn them. It doesn't mention concealment.

It does say you need to "present" your holy symbol. Whether this means "so it can be seen", or if it means "use as a Divine Focus" isn't specified.

But it's not because they can't see you that you can't turn them, in this case... it's because you're on the Ethereal Plane, and they aren't, and nothing from the Ethereal Plane can affect the Material Plane except a manifested ghost.
