Can flying creatures tumble?

Hmm... it looks like you'd have to have a bonus/penalty depending on the difference between you're flying rating and that of your opponent. Everyone on the ground is assumed to have the same man. rating, while there are definite classes from flying. Maybe for every difference in rating there is a = or - 2 to your check? Or should it be more?

Now, this I could see.
Although, really, I'd like as not leave it alone. You gotta move at half speed... or fly at half speed... to do it. If you can't fly at half speed, then I'd allow that you can't tumble.

The official answer from WOTC was that yes, you can tumble while flying.

They only suggest additional penalties as assigned by the situational means the DM has applied.

Personally I would suggest utilizing the maneuverabilty class and using it to replace the normal Dex Modifier for tumbling, since maneuverability is really saying how agile you are in the air.

not sure if this is going to make sense-

I always thought of tumbling as you are still moving quickly, just not in a straight line thus the half speed. I would say for flight it is similar, the creature still has the same speed just with the dips, twists, turns ect. so for calculations of how much area they have covered it is half speed.

It seems to me that if flying is natural to a creature they should be able to use tumble and gain ranks in it.

Considering how different flight is from ground movement, though, I don't think I would agree that anyone with tumble ranks can use these universally. Orcs naturally are going to be unwieldy in the air the first time and thus can not apply tumble ranks. The opposite I would say is also true lots of birds are sleek, fast and agile in the air yet on the ground they stumble.

I would allow Tumbling in the air, provided the flying creature has a maneuverability of Good or Perfect. Good maneuverability is the equivalent of a hummingbird's air control, which is plenty good-enough for the zigs and zags of airborn tumbling. And anything better than that, sure.

Anything less, though, lacks the control to make the sudden changes in direction and what-have-you that are part and parcel of Tumbling.

You could always create a feat to allow it. Dragons have the 'wing over' capability. Definitely aerial tumbling used by a crwature with poor maneuverability...

If I had a player interested, I won't say I might not be persuaded, though my gut instinct is no. Wing Over is a single aerial maneuver. Tumbling requires a plethora of such moves, You'd need Wing Over, Hover, and Fly-By Attack at least. Hrm...I might allow it for a creature that had all three of those feats. :)
