Can I combine different D20 system rules for a Wild West campaign?

WildWestGM

First Post
Hi,
I played role playing games throughout the 1980s and 1990s and then stopped. Now I'm getting back into it and going to play Modern D20 rules and do a Wild West campaign.
I'm in the process of learning the rules.
What I'd like to do is combine the rules of several of the D20 Wild West games, such as using classes from each system.
For example, I would like to incorporate a low level of magic for native Americans and I have the D20 Weird West and it covers magic.
The core source book will be Recoiled: Wild West but there may be some classes and feats I want to use from OGL Wild West, D20 Weird West.
Is this possible?
Eventually, I'd like to provide a "players handbook" that may be a cafeteria plan with rules, classes, skills, taken from different rule books.
From what I have read, OGL Wild West, D20 Weird West and Recoiled are all compatible with Modern D20.
Correct?
Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like fun, man. I'm not familiar with the books you cite, but my gut says to go for it. Rolling your own comprehensive rules document can be a lot of work, but it was worth it when I did it to combine parts of Trailblazer and Pathfinder.

it is fun... my only concern is that I'm just now learning D20 and now I'm trying to learn 3 different systems at the same time and incorporate them into one big rule book

You should be able to pick & choose d20 elements for your game relatively easily. I think d20 is a great system for Western games. I would not favor Modern or a lot of options from other books, but the basic system works well. There are many modifications you can make to suit your play style.

SHouldn't be an issue -

I currently play a game that is a blend of Pathfinder, Monte's Arcana Unearthed, some left over late 3.5 stuff, with a lot of 3rd party thrown in.

I've usually had not issues taking pieces from various D20 games and merging them. Just make sure that the pieces you put together fit fairly well - trying to blend things as disparate GR's D20 True Fantasy and Mongoose' Judge Dredd may not work too well. :D

I own all the D20 books I could find ... Recoiled, OGL's Wild West, D20 Weird West... even bought supplemental rules from websites for PDFs like "Texas Rangers" "Buffalo Soldiers" etc..

What I'm doing right now is as I learn the game, I'm writing down all the skills that are applicable for my campaign from all the rules books and putting them on index cards. For example, D20 Modern has several skills that don''t work (computer use) but the other rulebooks have several skill sets that do. (It's a very fun and effective way to learn the rules, also).

Cool.

I tend to go character happy - I come up with an idea, then go through all the books I've got looking at how to build the most minmaxed version I can (not CharOp boards level, but what I can, which is pretty good). So for fantasy I build a fighter, and a mage then something else.... by the time I'm done I've got a really good feel for what works and any odd rules - say I decide to build a counterspell focused mage - by the time I'm done I know the counterspelling system, and Dispel Magic spells well.

Then I file them all away, and use them for NPCs later. :D
