Can I have a mount and a companion?

Here's my question, I just started with a Beast ranger, I have a wolf for a pet and yes I can mount it but what I don't know is whether or not I can have a mount-class pet and my beast master companion at the same time, for this matter can I have any other combat familiars along side with my wolf? The reason behind this is that the wolf actually serves as a part of my character's story and I'm trying to not replace it.

Anyone who can help me, I'm a d&d n00b so i figured I'd ask here

You can *ride* the wolf, but it isn't a "mount" creature, since it doesn't have the mount keyword.

You can go out and buy a horse, and you can multiclass into an arcane class and take the Arcane Familiar feat. Neither of which interferes with your beast companion.

There is the feat, "beast rider," which lets you "ride (your beast companion) as a mount." You'd theoretically be able to use mount items (e.g. bardings) on it then.

Also there is a ritual called, "familiar mount," which lets you grow your arcane familiar to large size and ride it as a mount. That could be fun.

He can only ride the Wolf if he takes the "Beast Rider" feat or is a Gnome or a Halfling. Mounts are still restricted to being at least 1 size larger than the rider with the exception being the above feat.

Also with a mount and a beast companion you are really going to be hurting on actions in a round. Since you and the companion and mount will share the same action pool.

Depends on what you want the mount for. If it's a horse, your attacks can now originate from any of the mount's 4 squares without you needing to spend an move action (battlefield control). And when you take a move action, you use the mount's speed, which is bound to be greater than yours.

Of course, the best beast/mount is the Vadalis Griffon.

That Beast Rider Feat is pretty silly. A 200 lb man riding a 200lb wolf would look ridculis and I don't think the wold would be a companion for very long. There needs to be a feat to make your beast companion size Large.

Actually it's a 320 pound gnoll on a wolf.. With a bow and arrow... technically legal =D

So, as a n00b i'm just making sure, I can't attack with my bow on the same turn that my beast attacks with meelee? Although I understand the problem with allowing both I also can see a lore problem with not allowing both, IE the synchronizing of abilities of the Ranger and the Beast, which are supposed to be mostly seamless.

Is there some way around this? maybe a feat i've overlooked?

Sorry again i'm new to the game

I am not totally happy with how the beastmastery works myself but think of it this way a normal wolf fights in a team and so does yours you are its team your attacks generally involve it helping and its attacks generally involve you helping. Real wolves while one distracts the other hits and vice versi.

Haven't had a beast companion ranger in the group in months, but from what I remember, you and your beast each get a movement action, but only one attack. Even so, a lot of the companion based powers give you and your companion attack, or let one of the two shift into position for flanking or something. The issue I see is that Beast Ranger is mostly melee, since most of the "both you and your companion attack" require a melee weapon, or at least are in melee range.
