Remind me not to sign any contracts you put my way. 
The problem with having prestige classes invoke the exp penalty rule comes into a design issue - regardless as to whether or not WotC has put out "Offficial errata" on it or not.
In order to qualify for a prestige class a character must be at least 5th level (3.5 DM pg 197).
No biggie for a character that can get there with only a single class - but there is an automatic 4 level difference that way.
PrCl like MT would require a minimum of 3W/3Cl to qualify then the character would be 3W/3Cl/1MT and suffer an immediate 20% penalty until he raised his MT level up by 1 (regardless of any favored class his race has) - he then would have to keep on balancing his advancement between all 3 classes (or at least 2 of them depending on what hsi favored class is).
Another problem comes about when the PrCl has 5 or less levels. It becomes pretty much impossible to balance them out so the character almost always suffers an exp penelty. Not very prestigious sounding to me. the 3.0 DMG specifically had no multiclass penalty for PrCl it is fairly obvious this was an oversight that WotC has not correctly via errata, instead relying on Sage Advice (i.e., FAQ) to do their dirty work for them.

Wasn't it also stated that when they made 3.5, if something wasn't reprinted from 3.0 to 3.5, that it didn't need any updating, so use the 3.0 ruling?

If the FAQ -- which is to answer questions about the Rules As Written -- is not under strict jurisdiction of WotC, then it is not nor will be a credible resource. If WotC allow the author of the FAQ (i.e., Sage Advice) to operate loosely, then it has no official party-line function.Infiniti2000 said:

Like I said, D&D 3.5 was created to "fix" some spells, rulings and a few other much needed changes. It has been stated by WotC that if a rule was in 3.0 and was not reprinted in 3.5, then there was nothing wrong with that rule and you should use the 3.0 version of that rule. An example of this is Player's Guide to Faerun. There are spells in that book which were reworked. If a spell wasn't changed or put in PGtF then assume that MoF or FRCS rule for that spell is fine.
