Can someone explain PbP or PbM?

There are differences within each game on how everything works.

As a good example, there's the "In Character Character Game" where everyone is playing themselves made with d20 modern. The entire thing is filled with one-line posts and single sentences, making in game speech more like real life. Most combats consist of "Jane attacks the bugbear, giving it a resounding kick to the stomach" or even "<one-line joke>, Six stays where he is."

In other games, single posts can be long and detailed, describing the actions, thoughts and feelings of the character down to the last inch. These characters are prone to long speeches, and to letting others speak at length.

In both, combats take a long time, but that isn't so important since most games are primarily roleplaying anyway, and combat is the exception rather than the norm.

Levelling up is handled in different ways too. For some games its when the DM feels you've all suffered enough. Others have a strict XP system with awards for roleplaying, etc. Hell, the ICC game levels up every week!

However, there are two distinct advantages of PbP over PnP.
One, Inner Monologues. With Posting--and mail too, I guess--you can describe your character's thoughts and feelings in a much easier way than you can around a table.
Two, Playing the Game. AFAIK, most people on this board are DMs, and many rarely have the chance to actually PLAY the game rather than run it. PbP allows us to unwind and pull out that 1st edition character sheet from so long ago, update it to 3rd edition, and start reliving our memories. And this is thanks almost entirely to the good men and women who are willing to DM for us in their spare time. They are too many to mention, but all have our thanks!

Intriguing... I didn't know that... I've avoided the d20 Modern threads in 'Playing the Game' but now I'll have to look into that. Hrm, I know my stats in 3rd ed. (hey, what D&D obsessed geek doesn't?) but how to convert to d20 Modern...

I instituted a base 5XP per post idea that seems to be working out well, although it's a little fast when combined with combat XP as well. Essentially, I just do a spot judgement call which is entirely arbitrary, mood-based, and probably unfair :D I look at each post and think, "Nah, that's lame, you get ZERO fool!" or, "Hahaha, that was funny as bunnies in a shooting gallery, he gets 20 for that post!"

This is why I've always had a problem with giving RP XP as it's very arbitrary but it's also an incentive to post more often and post better, more interesting posts.

There's always room for more players! It's 32 point buy, BTW (we are SO heroic!)

Yet another Example of XP methods. There's as many as there are DMs. Maybe even more...

Here, have a 'thankyou' muffin. It's chocolate chip flavoured, but you won't be able to eat it since it's on the other side of the planet.
I know! I'll roleplay you as I eat it!
Mmm...muffin...yum...mmmm...

Play by Mail games (read: Play by Post or Play by E-mail)

Are simply games RPG, or games specifically designed for postal or e-mail via PDF or HTML format format have been around for eons.

Most of the traditional ones work by allowing you to enter orders for whomever you are playing, which then dictate your actions for that turn.

e.g. M 5 order would be Move South, or A <char id> woul;d be attack whomevers character ID you enter... and so forth.

there are also the RPG type PBM's where you simply write narrative for your actions based on a description or scene described by your GM and send them to him based on everyones replies he then writes a new description or scene including everyones responses and the cycles continues again... slowly moving you through an adventure. By the end you have had a good adventure and crafted an interesting narrative, you can look back on in the years to come.

A couple of my favourite traditional PBM companies, that do play by post AND play by e-mail (but not narrative type RPG described above)

Are Madhouse
[urlhttp://www.madcentral.com/index.htm[/url]

who offer many games (especially check out DungeonWorld) and even offer free introductory positions so you can check out the game.

Its GM Steve Tierney is a great guy.

and also

Silver Dreamer
http://www.madcentral.com/silverdreamer/

Whose main game Aspects of Might is wonderful and also offers a single character free for life position in order that you can find out about the game.

Its GM Justin Parsler is also a really ace guy.

Oh and both companies cater to play iregardless of global location, so ANYONE can play!
