Can Topic Spamming be Made Mod Actionable?

Hussar

Legend
There's a couple of topics - the "Is this a new Edition or Not?" being a prime example, or "WotC is completely corrupt" as another - that seem to infect many threads, no matter how tenuous the link to the actual topic of the thread it may be.

Would it be possible to make a couple of these topics mod actionable? I mean, back a few years ago, Edition Warring used to get slapped with red ink pretty quickly, and rightfully so (and I say that as someone who managed to draw attention a few too many times myself). Yeah, I get that thread topics drift, and that's not what I'm talking about. But, it would be nice if a couple of the more... strident topics could get pushed into their own little sound proof room and let those that want to hash it out, keep hashing it out, and leave the rest of us to enjoy threads without the highjacking.

That's really hard to moderate well, and overlaps uncomfortably with "silencing dissenting opinions". And I think a "WotC's Corruptness" subforum isn't something we'd be comfortable sitting there on our forum list!

(We haven't moderated edition warring in, what, 15 years or more? Though people still report it!)

To be clear - we don't moderate "edition warring" qua "edition warring".

We do moderate, "You are being a jerk relitigating a fight that is no longer relevant".

I hear what you're saying, @Hussar ... but you either have to scroll on by it, or put the people on ignore temporarily until your blood is less angered. Or ... ignore threads that are past a certain number of comments. As we all know, once threads hit a certain limit, it tends to transmogrify into the usual arguments that are unrelated to the original topic.

In addition, it's not like most posters are constantly hitting the same issues, right? In conclusion, bards suck.

It finally occurred to me that you don't hate Bards; you hate the bard that force fed you pineapple pizza.

So, you think it's a shtick, do you? You look at my anti-Bard rhetoric, and you think it's just some kind of obfuscation? That I am layered? That underneath this hatred of Bards lies something totally different than what's on the surface? That I am concealing a jovial tolerance of Bards underneath this harsh exterior?

Well, have you considered that there's a third, even deeper level, and that is the same as the one on the top? Like with pie.

My hatred contains multitudes. I am legion. Snarf ... think of me as the display case at your local diner. Full of pie. Legions of pie. I contain hordes of bard-hating pie.
