can we rethink the VIIIth amendment to the constitution?

I'm against the death penalty. The US has not shown an ability to fairly impliment it. Too many people are found innocent while on death row, mostly poor minorities. How many slipped through and died? It's never been shown to be a deterrent to criminals, and it's more expensive than life in prison. The US justice system isn't about revenge or "getting even", and it shouldn't be. More and more states are getting rid of the death penalty or putting them on hold until they can determine who on death row is really guilty.
