Can WotC really set "Core" to what they want?

What I fear for most, though, isn't the FR, but rather Eberron, with it's whole "everything that's in D&D is in Eberron" mandate. Through 3.5E, thats' not actually been true, thankfully. Eberron has no "Eastern" area that I'm aware of, nor does it features Samurai, Wu Jen, etc. If we see that each and every PHB update includes classes which are forcefully jammed into Eberron, well, I don't think that would be a good thing.
I don't think you really need to have a pseudo-Asia to use "Eastern" classes in a campaign setting, any more than 3e's iconic Paladin looks like one of Charlemagne's knights.

But, more importantly, I suspect the whole "everything that exists in D&D exists in Eberron" line never really meant that the official fluff or adventures would shoehorn in content from every random suppliment WotC published, but that the setting has room for any D&D content you want to use in it. Which, admittedly, doesn't really mean very much...

Don't forget the D&D insider auto update feature... I think that's going to have one of the most drastic effects on how the game is utilized.

If they make a change to the "Core" such as adding a new action type, or adding a new "widget type," perhaps they will do an auto update to your original core books.

Not perfect, but at least you'll have access to the material, and the designers get to work on the assumption that you already have the rules.

Eh? The Samurai and other eastern classes are used by some of the Dhakaani clans of Darguun. That's been pretty clear all along. Keith has stated that the monastic tradition of monk/rogues amoung the Dhakaani were intended to be Ninjas. (ECS pg 38)
