Can you cast spells if swallowed whole?

Being swallowed seems to follow the rules for being grappled pretty closely (tiny weapons allowed, etc). I'd say you could cast V only and then you need a Concentration roll. Which lets you cast Teleport, the only spell you probably want to cast at that point.

Light weapons - your hands are certainly light weapons, and you only need one hand free to cast a spell. If there is room for another creature, I would allow it.

Also, there is air there, but it certainly isn't going to be pleasant. The stomach acid of most creatures is only going to sting - so acid damage will not always apply (on a per round basis anyway)

I have to wonder - when dealing with creatures that could just barely swallow you - would you not want to try to make life living hell for them and stop up their throat?

The crushing damage is 2d8+8 and another 8pts of acid damage. So if you figure average rolls we'll have 25pts of damage per round from being inside. That would equal a DC 22 + spell level or 28 for word of recall. 12th level Cleric has +16 in Concentration with 12 con, but I think before battle he'll cast a maximized endurance for 15 con. So he'll have +17 concentration, which isn't consistently good enough to beat a DC28 even IF he prepares word of recall. He knows they're in trouble so he might not.... They also have a magic item called a refuge stick that when broken takes them back to the guys room who helped them, I have a feeling he'll use this.

The bite damage to initially start the swallow is 5d8+13, or about 35pts of damage. I think the Cleric will be hurting, but that's going to be his own fault for wielding their artifact in battle... :)

Err, 11+17 = 28. So, on an 11-20, he'd make it (50% chance). Most people, even mages, can eat 20 points of damage for a couple rounds or so...

Maximized Endurance should give him 17 con, not 15, so, 55% chance :-)

He has 10 con, 12 with his whatever of Con, which dosen't stack with maximized endurance. He has a brick of incense or whatever it's called that maximizes all your spells for the day. He has about 80hp after the maximized. If he takes 35 during the bite damage that's practically half. 25 per round means he has 2 rounds in the belly before dying and that's only IF he's not damaged first. The PC's still have to fight other things before the T-rex in the same battle. I warned them this area was rough, but rumors of loot and massive concentrations of evil have managed to give them all dollar signs and knighthoods in front of their eyes.... (SPOILERS)..... this is the Black Spike in the inner fane of the Temple of Elemental Evil.

50% is good enough for me, I just don't know if he'll do the suicide route and explode the T-rex from the inside. Clerics of Herionious have awful weird notions of martyrdom. I've already decided that if he can make the con checks for getting off an area affect offensive spell it'll be an auto-kill for himself and the T-rex. Kind of like in Jaws.... :) If a PC wants to go out like a Hero I'll bend the rules a bit for him.. :)
