I truly cannot believe that anyone would be so arrogant as to think that any style of play is wrong. This utterly blows my mind. The poll as it stands as I type this is actually tied. Granted, it's only 8 to 8, but, whoa, you could knock me over with a feather.

Sorry, just because you don't like it doesn't make it wrong. It is the utter height of arrogance to think otherwise.

I said 'Yes'. Now, I don't think powergaming or building crazy templated characters is wrong if it works for the group. I don't think railroading, or drama queening without dice are wrong if they work for the group. None of the typical playstyles people shout out as 'wrong' is really wrong.

But I voted 'Yes' because you CAN play the game wrong. You can play it with real swords and stab the other players, killing those whose characters die. This is always wrong. You can also play in a style that the other people at the table don't like, but you won't listen because you're the GM. This is only relatively wrong, and once you find another group that fits with the style, it won't be the wrong thing to do anymore. Now, do people actually do these things? On the former, I hope not. On the latter, maybe more likely. But they certainly can, and the question asks if they can.

Its not easy to play it wrong, but entirely possible.
For example if the game is so altered in setting or rules it is no longer recognizably D&D. Then you wouldn't be playing DnD. And thus by claiming to play DnD be playing it incorrectly.

Theoretically I could houserule a DnD game so much and alter the fundamentals of a DnD campaing setting so much that it would be something entirely different.

In fact if DnD was the first RPG, what all other RPGs were based off of, then this to an extant is what happened.

I can anways. If I don't absolutely make sure my turn in combat is settled within about 3 seconds then dice are thrown :(

Short answer--no. Long answer--yes, you can play the game "wrong" for me, in such a way that I won't want to play with you. But this is more about personality conflict than game mechanics.

Sure you can play it wrong.

When you roll a d12 for your attack roll, you're playing it wrong
Beyond that, you're playing it fine.

Exactly. There comes a time when if you don't follow enough of the rules you're no longer playing D&D. Where that line is is hazy and varies from person to person, but using d12 for attack rolls would qualify in my book.
