Can you touch type?

I took a typing class way back in high school, and years spent on BBSes chatting with friends made me a very good, very fast typer. Last time I was tested (2001), I typed 99 wpm with over 95% accuracy.

I have a friend who makes me look like a snail though. I swear he must type at least 130 wpm, and he almost NEVER makes mistakes.

The strange thing is that I do not type how you are "supposed" to type. My hands move more like hunt and peck than a general touch typist. I never use my pinky for anything but shift, and my hand configuration changes dramatically for cut and paste work. My left ring finger doesn't really get any action at all, now that I think about it.

I'm much the same - I 'drift' a lot, and tend to use whatever finger's closest.

Although my left ring finger does get used a lot, since it's usually the closest to the whole QWASZX area.

My sign-off, for example, is usually Right-Mid, Left-Pinky-and-Left-Index, Left-Mid, Right-Mid, Right-Index. In formal touch-typing, I suspect it would be Right-Ring, Left-Pinky-And-Right-Index, Right-Index, Right-Pinky, Right-Ring... and that feels horrid!

Oh, and that typing test somebody posted above says I type 79 WPM net (I'm assuming that takes into account errors). I could probably get faster if I took it a few more times, but I don't really care that much.

Huh. I didnt notice that test url earlier.
96 WPM gross, 83 WPM corrected. 85% accuracy. So I type fast but sloppy?
That's better then I thought I'd be, but I wish my accuracy was better.

Technically, I dont think it's touch typing, but I can MOSTLY type without looking at the keyboard. Mostly I just use the first 2 fingers on each hand and the thumb for the space bar. Shift is pinkie finger, but that's usually just it. Sometimes I'll have to look at the keyboard for numbers, but that's usually it.

Strangely, this only works if I dont think about typing. The moment I do, I need to start looking at the keyboard to type correctly. Switchin keyboards messes me up for a while too until my hands 'learn' to correct.

I've never had it timed, but I'm told I'm a pretty speedy typer.
This is darn near a perfect description of me, too. I was only a few of my fingers, but I'm pretty fast. A first try on the Wizard of Oz test above had me at 72WPM (93% accuracy, so 68 net) and that's without trying too hard. I'm sure I could get to a cool 80WPM, no touch typing.

On easy, it's too easy. I was unstoppable and got bored so I let the guy die (what, no quit button?).

It gets harder, but it does take a while. I don't know how long I played it before it started getting difficult, but it was a while.
