Thirty miles an hour doesn't seem very fast. That's more than 3 hours in the air to get 100 miles.... How fast did late medieval cannons fire their payload, anyway?

That's a good point, and I don't know. I figured I would give it a relatively slow "cruising" speed to be consistant with dragon speeds; it's still faster than a fly spell. That's only 60 feet per round instead of 200; basically, a crawl.

Hrm. I'm going to have to give that one some thought. Thank you!

well, here is a suggestion... since the ignition is already magic-augmented, the use of cannon is not that really important, you could use catapult to avoid fear of that inertial blast... and explain the unnatural speed of projectile by "it's magic"

after searching for a while just how fast does canon projectile go, it was clear to me that it was MUCH faster than the projectile in this topic... in addition to gravity, angle of the cannon, wind resistance and weight of the projectile, greatest impact on projectile speed is the muzzle velocity... just how fast and how far can a projectile fly, read here --> http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2003/GabrielaBis.shtml and i'm going to give you just one quote:
The speed of these artillery shells can reach up to speeds of about 1600 m/s or, in English units, about one mile per second
