Can't get "into" characters...

Its a technique I learned before getting into RPGs actually. Among other things, I'm an artist, designer and musician. If I'm not careful, an idea that pops up in my head for something new may just run around in there, dominating my concentration...and thus, distracting me from other important things.

Once I started doing quick renderings of those ideas in some concrete form (a sketch, a note, a chord progression), however, my mind can get back to the job at hand.

Hmm... That's actually a really neat trick. Did you come up with that on your own, or is that a common thing for artsy types? I'll have to give it a try.

Its something I picked up from reading about the psychology of dreams when I was in 2nd grade. For people who are troubled by their dreams (esp. recurrent ones), some professionals suggested that they either talk about the dreams with someone or write them down in a journal they keep by their bed.

Further down the page, someone else noted that this technique also works for creative types who find themselves solving problems or finding inspirations in their dreams.

I thought...if it works for groggy dreamers, it may work for distracted daydreamers. And it did.

By the time I was getting formal tuition in the arts, I found that some of my teachers preached essentially the same thing- keep a sketchbook, keep a notebook, keep a poetry journal.

And after years in the music biz, I know for a fact that prolific musicians almost always carry around compositional journals, blank sheet music pages or small portable recorders.

It may not be able to prevent you from losing your train of thought when someone distracts you with a knock to your door- like Coleridge was when trying to transcribe Kubla Khan from a dream- but you won't lose everything, and you'll be able to retain your focus.

I pretty much prefer DMing over being a player. And while I get really annoyed when players want to change their characters (because it disrupts the story arcs built around them and the bond and drive of the party), I get bored with my own characters in 3 sessions...

Like Dannyalcatraz, I also keep a log with several PC builds. Some of them even became NPCs on my defunct 3.5E campaign!

I may try the "assistant to DM" approach in my gaming group's regular campaign in which I am not the DM.

Cheers,

We have a similar problem in our group, not really due to ADD, more due to 'so many choices, so little time'. We only get to meet up once every three weeks and only play one campaign at a time. This means that there are far more 'interesting character ideas' than there are campaigns to play them in...

In most of our games we have a laise faire attitude to this. Just recently we have started a campaign (about 4 sessions in now) where the DM specifically said that he had a strong campaign arc and wanted us to keep playing the same characters throughout. This has thrown up a couple of minor challenges.

One of the players in the group doesn't seem to get this 'game contract' and keeps talking about switching from an Invoker to a Warder (though he remains adamant that he is still enjoying playing the Invoker). We have to remind him of the game contract on a fairly regular basis.

Another problem (caused by me) is that I built a character I thought I would enjoy playing (a Bard) and I'm simply not. I love Bards on paper, and would normally enjoy all the stuff they can do. The problem is that at the moment real life is very busy and I don't have the mental energy to play the 'face' of the party as well as needed. And this is compounded by the fact that no one else built a strong 'talky' character as mine blew their skill totals out of the water. The proposed compromise is that I effectively swap characters with another player at the table who had taken on the talking role, but didn't have the stats for it.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out...

Cheers.

So as a bit of a post script, today was the first day of classes at Salem State College. While I graduated in May, that means that many of my friends have returned including the DM of the last game I got to play, and he mentioned wanting to continue it.

Anyways, I told him my idea (of playing pseudo-NPCs according to the needs of his story) and I barely even had the words out of my mouth before he literally hugged me. So yeah, he was totally happy with the idea, and I'm currently working on an invoker for him, which is a class I've been wanting to try but don't think I'd want to play too long.

So... yay!
