Has anyone else seen this book? IT is from a smaller game company so I won't be suprised if most people haven't heard of it. I've never seen it for sale at any of the local stores so I'm not sure how the distrubution of this little gem is.

It is a supers game and even with M&M being so great I can see people wanting to play this game instead. It isn't that it is better then Muntants and Masterminds but it is different. THe coolest thing is that it has no GM. It has a round robin GM system that really looks freaking cool. THe auther really has a good voiuce for bringing it across and offers some really cool ideas in it. I'm not done reading it yet, bnut so far I am really impressed by this.

The game alsop doesn't have people always playing or controling the same character. Suring each scene everyone picks the character they want to play. It can be a hero, a villian, or a by stander. People can control more then one character at a time so there can be many characters in a scene.

The main theme of the game is "Power is fun, but do you deserve it?". Heros prove they are worthy of the gifts they have been bestoed, its really cool. The systems seems a little complexd and different tyhen anything I've ever read but it does sound fun.
 


I got to play some Capes at TerpsCon a little while back. I loved it a lot. So much fun. It's a strategy game, psychological game, and a roleplaying game all rolled up into one. I've actually convinced my D&D group to give it a try... they won't touch it for super heroes, but we've made up Capes sheets for each of their D&D characters, and for more abstract events, like fighting on the astral plane or for certain diplomatic manuevers, we use the capes system instead of D20. It's worked out surprisingly well.
 

That sounds pretty cool. I wqill say some of the bigger companies can learn a thing or two about writing a main book from Capes. It includes reasons to sale the game to ones gaming group, it has sample play chapter and pletny of examples. It is a little hard to follow at times but with the extras it was actually easier and made sense. It seems like a flexible and adpatible system. I doubt I'll get a chance to play any time soon, but it is a fascinatingly different game.
 

We carry it on an exclusive basis at Indie Press Revolution and it is one our best sellers. It's a great little game that is tightly designed and fun to play. The writing is inspiring and it makes you get back to the basics about what it means to be a true hero. I know it sparked some controversy at RPG.net over whether it was actually an RPG or not, but that's besides the point. If you're looking for a fun superheroes game that is easy to learn and has an interesting twist to playing, I'd definitely recommend checking out Capes.
 

Thanks Ed, I must have missed that thread on RPG.net about this. I wish their search function worked. That is an interesting point as tyhe game is different from many traditional RPGs. I think though it still qualifies as one, just expands the definition quite a bit. :D
 

Any time. I think the discussion about whether Capes is an RPG or not was not in a thread on the messageboards, but in the Reviews section. I really like Capes because it's something you can just read on the train or in the bathroom. It's a relatively small book packed with just the information you need to play. I like the way it's written, too. As the author-designer Anthony Lower-Basch says, "Capes is a superhero game with heart. As you play you will show the amazing things that your hero can do and, just as important, their inspiring reasons for doing them." Great stuff.
