Caprica

I liked it.

Very different from Battlestar Galactica in some ways, very much the same in other ways. I think it will be pretty interesting.

I liked the computational paper.
I immediately saw though, from how easily it interfaced with other media, why they could have never used it on BG.

I liked it enough to be willing to watch more of it. I saw the extended pilot on Hulu a few days ago.

I have never actually seen any Battlestar Galactica, though I've had it recommended to me a few times. I don't have an easy opportunity to rent it (not a Netflix member or anything like that - too expensive for how often I watch movies) but if it comes around to the first season again on Hulu I'll definitely start watching.

I figured if this is a spinoff from Battlestar that I might give it a try. I hope not having seen any Battlestar episodes and only being minorly familiar with the lore won't be a detriment. (It hasn't been so far, but this was just the pilot.)

Merk, I don't think you'll need to be familiar with BG to enjoy the issues I expect the show will explore.

In many ways I expect the two shows will explore pretty much exactly the same issues, the difference being that BG addressed these issues form a cosmic, strategic, species and racial way. Caprica I expect will explore these issues from a tactical, individual, and personal way.

I also expect this show to be far more tech-heavy, with a lot of tech that focuses on VR, the mind, genetics, AI, and the psyche (soul).

Well, the pilot was interesting and makes me want to see more. ;)

Only on my second viewing of the pilot (the first time is a while ago) I actually noticed how they talked about how Zoe could "create life" and supposedly - according to the monotheists at least - she had contact to god. It doesn't really matter if that's true or just make-believe, but it certainly highlights why the Cylons later thought of this as so important. Their origin can be traced back to them.

BSG related recommendations: Battlestar Galactica (TNS) is an awesome show. It combines interesting mythology, interesting, complex characters and space battles in a unique way.

Regarding Caprica - one thing I observed and already mentioned when the pilot was first shown - I think the show has also one interesting aspect that was never really used before. It is basically set in an alternate reality where humans are pretty much like us - but they have a different history and religion. So at one level they are easy to connect to, because they are human beings just like us, with similar needs and experiences. But they still have a different background, a different world, and this gives fascinating avenues to explore. It's not just "What-if-the-Nazi-won" or "what-if-the-Roman-Empire-never-fell" alternate history. It is more like the world of Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms or Middle Earth - an entirely different world. But unlike that, it is not set in a (pseud)medieval world with magic and all that. It is set in the now or the near future.

It kinda gives a much richer playground to explore than "just" using our world. For example, I can image setting a Batman or Superman equivalent story on the 12 Colonies. What a fascinating concept that would be!

Netflix doesn't have any sort of contract or committment, so you could sign up, watch Battlestar, and then drop it pretty easily. Of course, it is an addicting service IMO, and it's hard to drop once you start because they always seems to be more movies and tv shows available that I either haven't seen or would love to see again.

But the plans start out pretty reasonable. The basic plan of getting one DVD at-a-time is roughly $9/month. There's even a cheaper plan where you get only 1 DVD at-a-time, but are limited to 2 DVDs per month, and that's about $6.

But of course, if you have enough geeky friends in your circle, somebody's bound to have BSG on disc that they could lend you! :)

Just beware, BSG is one of the best shows on television, but it's dark and grim and I think it can get overwhelming if you get a season on disc and try to marathon over a weekend or so.

See, when there's a Redbox in our grocery store and we never watch more than one movie a week (it's usually more like one every two weeks) we can get the same thing for $2-$4 a month. :)

At some point I might bite the bullet and go Netflix, but not just now.

I watched it on DVD. I did not watch the broadcast version. When it starts with something I have not seen before, I certainly shall watch it.

Whether or not it ends up being the sort of show that BSG was remains to be seen. That's a pretty high bar, imo.

I honestly am somewhat skeptical about the show. The Moore name and BSG in general has gone a bit down in my estimation after the last season, and frankly Razor and The Plan were a bit horrible.

The show does have to now be consistent with BSG, and the Cylon Mythos of the "Final 5".....which is a pretty strong limitation for a new show....and one they will make work, or for the most part ignore.

I tend to be a bit of a continuity freak, and it may quickly drive me away.
A stand alone IP of course escapes the continuity issues.

I thought it was OK. I will continue to watch and see where it goes.
