Guide of Modos
I've use the Diablo (for AD&D 2E) and Diablo 2 (for D&D 3E) books put out by TSR/WotC, and had the World of Warcraft & Everquest books that I mined for D&D games. Does that count?
Diablo: no. That's a system written specifically for a video game.
Mining WoW and Everquest books: yes. (I'm guessing) you took game ideas to give D&D a certain feel. How did that go for you?
Another example:
I was thinking Mega Man would make a really cool RPG. So I'm thinking: what would a Mega Man game look like?
Set hit points: each (main) character has the same hit points, around 20 or so.
Levels: characters don't really gain levels, they just get more stuff. More backup batteries, enemy powers, and of course, 1-ups.
Minions: most opponents have 1-5 hit points. It's not how strong they are, but -where- they appear. See next point.
Terrain: Mega Man is all about terrain. Jumping is HUGE. Different positions should give certain advantages, be difficult to reach, and offer cover from opponents.
Hacking: beat another cyborg, hack his weapons system. Weapons systems should be balanced enough to be cool, without giving PCs too much power.
What did I miss?
