Care to comment on a spell...?

Absolutely.

How can you not? The spell says that overlapping strikes do not deal additional damage; in my 'scenario' the critter is struck on all sides by the flame bursts, and none of them overlap, therefor each does additional damage to the critter. Now why not apply that to a humanoid - each blast is precisely placed so that each side strikes the enemies square, but doesn't overlap any of the other blasts. You should be able to get in at least two on her, if not three or four if you start thinking of stacking them in 3D. Sounds great to me as a player, not balanced at all as a DM.

Anyway, I would tack on a line about doing only one blast worth of damage to the same creature. You could drop the level some, but as this spell has multiple surgical strike fireballs, I would keep it where it's at since the total area of effect almost doubles. Now imagine you are that same 20th level wiz kid - you can decimate a 10' by 200' long corridor of area with one shot. A fireball couldn't get that kind of precision in such a powerful punch, so I think the level is ok.

The only spells in the core rules that I'm aware of that deal additional damage when multiple parts of the same spell strike the same creature are spells like A) magic missile or scorching ray, where the spell specifically states that targeting multiple missiles or rays or parts of the spell at a single target deals additional damage, or spells like B) meteor storm, which is essentially the same case as a magic missle, but involves additional effects as well.

In either case, the spell states that multiple parts of the spell against a single target deals additional damage.

In other words, unless the spell says you can, you can't (in regards to this particular discussion).

Ok, that makes sense. I didn't realize that was the case, but is perfectly reasonable as a catch-all for multiple target spells.

Quoth Geoff Watson...
What does SuM mean?
SuM is just my abbreviation for the Sun Mage variant core class from FFG's Path of Magic... The character interested in this spell is currently a 14th level Sun Mage and is trying to plan ahead for his first 8th-level spell...

thanks to everyone for their comments... much appreciated...
