Casting From A Scroll In Combat - Walk Me Through It

And from the Spell Compendium:

Magic Items: Activating a spell completion item, activating a spell trigger item, or drinking a potion is a standard action even if the spell from which the scroll, potion, or item is made can be cast a swift action, In other words, it takes a standard action to drink a potion of quick march even though casting the spell itself requires only a swift action.

This is the part that prevents reading a scroll as a swift action.

Funny I thought it went.

1a. Retrieve scroll from scroll case/pocket/bag/whatever (counts as retrieving a stored item) - Move action that draws an AoO.
1b. Opponent uses AoO to sunder scroll.
2. There is no step 2.
Nope, the AoO is resolved before the action that provokes the attack, so the scroll isn't drawn yet for the first provoked action. Though, if you rule the trip on the standing up AoO, then you will be fine here.

At least, I guess that's it. :uhoh:

Forgot to include it. I go overboard sometimes. A Bad habit of mine.

Hey, no worries. I wasn't singling you out. In fact, in my experience on the Rules forum, you haven't been one of the confrontational people I was talking about. And I do appreciate your rules input. :) ;)

Apart from the HHH, is there any other items or equipment that will help me retrieve and cast the scrolls quicker and/or help me avoid AoO?

Infinite scrollcase, from Magic of Eberron and Magic Item Compendium... not quite "infinite" (it can hold up to 50 scrolls at a time, but note that there's no special limit on the number of spells on each scroll), but I believe it lets you get the scroll in particular you want as a free action as long as you have it in hand, and it gives a Concentration bonus to casting defensively when doing such.

Yeah, that FAQ really screwed over everyone that likes scrolls.

We had scry-and-die scrolls, for when the enemy teleported away, which worked exactly once the whole campaign. And wands of Lesser Restoration came in handy. Even had a cleric with a Caster's Shield with Close Wounds scribed on it.

Of course, we eventually had so much junk we didn't need scrolls anymore, but that game ended at level 27.

By essentially restating the DMG passage that the casting time of a spell is the time required to activate the same power in an item, whether it be a scroll or not?
