Casting spells and alignment

Yes. Whether he'd be able to cast any cleric spells afterward is a different issue (and up to the DM).

I assume you mean that while the spell was active you wouldn’t be able to contact / receive spells from your god. If this is the way your DM rules it, it makes the Protection from (X) spell MUCH more powerful.

If you fight an evil cleric, cast Prot Evil on him, boom he’s not a cleric anymore. He can’t even dispel it because he can’t cast anything.

I don't think that's what he meant, Tatsu. I think he was just suggesting that a cleric who evades his deity's restrictions on spellcasting by casting the spell as an arcane spellcaster may be considered 'disobedient' by his deity. Cleric: "I need to cast protection from good. God: "You can't-you and I are Good, and I won't give you access to that spell." Cleric: "Well, as it happens, I'm a cleric/wizard, and I have protection from good in my spellbook. So you can't stop me! Nyah-nyah!" God: "Puny mortal! Repent or be damned! And I'm sure not giving you spells anymore if that's going to be your attitude!"

No, I mean that the cleric's god might get angry with him for trying to dodge restrictions on spellcasting. "So you think that I wouldn't notice you summoning that Lemure with your arcane skills? No more spells for you!"
