To me, "conversion" always seemed a matter of looking in your preferred edition of the Monster Manual rather than at the published stats in the module. Yeah, this can throw off the level requirements, but that's why you do it the night before the game rather than day of.

That's pretty much the way I see it. Run as written, substituting a D&D ruleset of your choice where appropriate. I prefer to run more or less balanced encounters for my players, but I wouldn't do that here, because that's not really part of the design philosophy. Old school D&D never took balanced encounters into account.
