I'm an avid 1E Fan and am not too fond of any other editions of D&D. I'm considering purchasing Castles & Crusades.

I'd like to know how much I need to know about the D20 system in order to be able to play it and how well it would adapt to a Middle Earth type game.

None, although it make make the Siege Engine easier to understand. (The explanation is the book could be a bit clearer).

Medium. You'd have to nix a lot of the spells, or play in a non-canonical Middle Earth with regard to what-magic-can-do. I'd say the system as a whole is a bit more adaptable that AD&D, so it would be a bit easier to use for a Middle Earth campaign.

Well, you don't need to know anything about the D20 system, everything is in the Players Handbook.

Basically, Armor Classes go up, anything you want to try you roll a D20 and want to roll high.

Everything else is just details.

A middle earth campaign?, about like trying it with either 1st or 3rd edition. It can be done, but you need to either 1) revamp the spellcasting classes, 2) handwave the difference between the books and the magic system or
3) put spell casting soley in the hands of NPCs

It is a good fun system. The links Treebore posted are superb for checking it out.
