Cat's Grace: Not a Cleric spell?

First Post
Clerics are known for buffing. It's one of the things they're good at. So in designing a cleric for PbP play, I figured I'd toss in cat's grace as one of my "standard" preps.

But then I was looking at my spell worksheet--and it didn't have cat's grace on it. Bull's strength and every other ability buff spell, but not cat's grace. It's also not listed in the PHB or SRD at a cleric spell--Brd 2, Sor/Wiz 2.

Does anyone know if this has been errataed/FAQ'd? It seems very odd to me that clerics can cast all 5 other ability buffs, but not the one for Dex.

I never understood this one either. I have never seen any errata fixing this, I just rule 0ed it over to the cleric spell list.

Check with the PbP GM and see if he has made that change as well.

I always thought Clerics were good at healing......

Anyway, yes it's true, Cat's Grace is not a Cleric spell. It does, however, exist as a Domain spell (Elf comes to mind).

Clerics aren't known for their dexterity. Which is probably why the creators opted to keep it off their spell list. Clerics wouldn't be hurting if they didn't have access to this spell.

IMHO

Certainly, clerics would not themselves be hurting... but buffing the party archer becomes more difficult without cat's grace. :) Do most clerics really spend the majority of their spells on *themselves*?

Notice also that Bard's do not get Endurance.

What about the non-physical buff spells from Tome and Blood (amongst others)? These are available to Wiz/Sor/Bards and Clerics.

In our group we allow Wiz/Sor all three, Clerics get Owl's Wisdom and Eagle's Splendour and Bard's get Fox's Cunning and Eagle's Splendour.

Our rationale is that Intelligence is like mental dexterity and Wisdom mental Constitution.

No, it hasn't been updated into inclusion (but who knows about 3.5e).

The basis for the choice may have been legend and mythology (since that is where most of the clerical spells, etc. come from).

There are prohpets and religious heros known for their great strength, unending endurance, quick wit, deep wisdom, and charm to rally the masses.

No where (that I can recal) are there prophets or religious heros specifically known for their ability to bend/flex/dodge.

Then, by relation, this may be why they do not get this spell on their basic spell list.

Yes, I realize chances of them actually using spells on themselves is slim, but this is just the rationale I see when looking at it. And, truthfully, I agree / have no problem with it not being on the list.

All this is conjecture though and no one aside from the designers and such know why it isn't on there.

If you want it on there in your game, add it in.

:)

I've house ruled Clerics to get cats grace. I mean they get every other buff, so why not dex? I may do the same with bards.
