[sblock=Fulgrim]Intelligence (Arcana) 23 result: the floating orb was a Spectator. They use their eyestalks to instill confusion, fear, paralysis, or necrotic damage. They use the Deep Speech or Undercommon tongues, commonly. And can see very, very well in the dark, and are quite perceptive (quick to notice things). Fulgrim didn't see it in play here, but he thinks he recalls reading that the Spectator is related to a beholder and has the ability to boomerang a missed magical attack on the person who cast the spell. EDIT: Forgot to say they have the monster Telepathy ability--the MM doesn't indicate that the subject of Telepathy gets a saving throw, so I just went with it.[/sblock]

A check of the dark-skinned elf revealed a medium-sized chain shirt, a longsword, a coin pouch with 95 gold pieces tucked in a breast pocket, a missive written in elvish script, and a heavy silver signet ring emblazoned with a black "X." All four orcs had greataxes, and Orc4 had a whip coiled at his hip. None of the orcs had any coin. Their hide armor was moderately intact but stank to high heaven. The barding on the spider was rent in half but could maybe be repaired by someone with skill. The spider's riding saddle--a confection of stitched leather and metal chain--night be worth some money to the right buyer, perhaps. The orb had nothing, save for four two eyestalks.

Spec re-stowed his rope of the arachnea and had a look at the ceiling tile. It appeared that someone or something had perhaps attempted to shove open the panel, but aborted the attempt. The panel door hadn't slid more than half an inch, and half the rope had still been affixed to the ceiling. More, Spec hadn't detected any twitching in the rope, and he'd been holding it for most of the fight. Neither had Fulgrim or Roscoe spotted anything coming out of the ceiling.

The party inspected the ceiling panel, closed a door, re-grouped, had a think, and searched the elf, orb, spider, and four orcs for loot. As you went about your business over the course of a few minutes, toward the end of that time Spec thought he heard a door or doors opening somewhere within the hold. If he was correct, the sound came from the north--somewhere beyond the closed double doors. A beat later, Guran also heard a noise coming from the north (though what it was, he couldn't say).

OOC: I assume you mean you closed the door in Q43, [MENTION=23484]Kobold Stew[/MENTION]? I currently have folks in these grid squares: Guran T42, Fulgrim T43, Colden R43, Roscoe Q43, and Spec Q42. Please let me know if you want to be elsewhere.

Spec tells the others what he thinks he hears, and in light of Fulgrim's vision, suggests moving as soon as possible.

OOC: I'm fine at Q42; Yes the door dividing P43 and Q43 was the one I meant to close.
Spec will put into the bag anything unclaimed. He's eyeing the chain shirt for himself, since he knows how much noise he makes, but if it remains unclaimed at the next rest, will change into it.

Guran replies that moving right away would mean that he should ask Father Spec to heal his wounds, rather than using a rest to do that, since the vials of stored beer from the fountain have become rancid away from the fountain. "Normal beer starts out kind of 'green', but gets better after a few weeks; this stuff seems to start out magical but then go flat and kind of orangey with the passage of time. Maybe the magic of the fountain confers a kind of temporary wonderfulness to it."

About the found loot, Guran mentions that he is already wearing a chain shirt, so the one they found is of no particular use to him. He doesn't like the look of the heavy signet ring with the "X" marked on it; but about the scroll of elvish script, he inquires of Fulgrim if the wizard can comprehend that language by using a ritual of some kind. He adds further, "If you can, and we have time to wait while you do, we might learn valuable information."

[edit] Guran adds that he also heard a sound to the north -- that is, beyond the double doors. He also adds that they haven't explored the southernmost corridors in the eastern half of Stonefast yet.

OOC: Spec is ready to push on -- so far no one has taken the offer of healing, but it's still there. At Guran's words, he'll pour out the fluid containers, since it is not longer a healing potion.

OOC: Edited above. I can't cast Comprehend Languages unless I cast it as a ritual. I don't have it prepared. I keep forgetting that...

So, do we want to retreat somewhere safe so Fulgrim can spend 10 minutes casting the spell as a ritual?

"The cries sounded urgent to me. Indeed," says Father Spec, "I have a general sense of urgency overall. Our meticulous exploration might need to be sacrificed if we are to be able to help those most in need."
